I recently had a conversation with a young friend who expressed his displeasure at the lack of conservative candidates in this presidential election cycle. His feeling, shared my many on the right, is obviously that John McCain is not a “real” conservative. I’ve heard this sentiment from many conservatives in the past few months - from high profile squawkers like Rush Limbaugh and James Dobson to rank and file folks in my everyday life. I’m more than a little sympathetic to their complaints. I myself have spent no small amount of mental energy since the New Hampshire primary trying to come to terms with the reality that John McCain will be the Republican (and by extension, conservative) standard bearer for 2008.
The list of conservative grievances against McCain is long, but I think the least forgivable are McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance Reform (I challenge you to find a bigger legislative travesty), his vote against the Bush tax cuts, and his participation in the so-called Gang of 14.

McLame is an angry, stupid receptacle for kooky ideas like man-made global warming which does not exist, and which could crush America’s economy if he gets his way on it. He owes it to his country to do a LITTLE research on the widely discredited MSM view of this destructive hoax.
McLame has no clue how the economy works. He is for tax cuts, after having opposed them -for political reasons only.
McLame is a shameless egomaniac RINO. Will the NYT love me for saying this? I’ll say it.
McLame wants to close Gitmo and would just as soon see New York blasted by a nuke as get his hands dirty doing a Jack Bauer on a known al-Qaida murderer. Or even pour a little water up his nose. Pandering gets morally retarded if you act on an indefensible idea like that.
McLame actively sought to become Hanoi John Kerry’s running mate in 2004. He’s either lying about being a Reaganite conservative (yes), or he’d have been willing to lie about Kerry’s wonderfulness for four years (yes as well). What honor?
Plusses:
McLame wil see Iraq through. We know what happens when America is perceived as having “lost” a war. Last time the Dems pulled a defeat out of the jaws of victory we got Afghanistan, Iran, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Cambodia, Boat People, Angola, Lebanon, etc...
McLame is pro-life. With Stevens at death’s door and Ginsburg in the waiting room, we could avoid two young Dem appointees on the the court. We will likely get a couple of Kennedys out of McLame. That could rid us of Roe v. Wade. That is a heavy brick, folks. Don’t take it off the scale.
McLame wants to cut pork. Does he want to reform entitlements? Unknown. But he’s our best chance.
McLame says he’s against tax increases. Now. Again, best we can do.
McLame and Mitt Romney are getting along now. We might get a great Vice Presidential nominee who understands economics. And McLame is old. Really old if you get my drift.
I am dis-satisfied with McCain.
You, on the other hand, are watching too much TV.
The “least forgivable?”
Let's see - anybody remember immigration and McCain's Mexican amnesty adviser - how about legal rights for terrorists, no waterboarding, and closing Guantanamo Bay - how about his “New” Global Warming Treaty, and his cap-and-trade CO2 credits scheme - how about his repeated criticisms of Evangelical Conservatives, who are part of the foundation of the Republican Party.
There is one - and only one - reason a Conservative might vote for McCain, and that is the fear that Obama or Clinton will be even more destructive than McCain.
I have all but made my mind up to write in Rush Limbaugh's name in the general election.
The next liberal to ruin America really needs to have a (D) next to their name.
Chances of that are slim to none. He has been my senator his entire career. We tried to run a recall on him once but we failed to get rid of him.

Nonsense. He was one of Alito's biggest boosters. What he said was that he would try to find jurists more like Roberts rather than one who "wore his conservatism on his sleeve."
McCain is far, far, far more conservative than Goldwater. Goldwater was more libertarian in his social policies.
That FRiend is unlikely to happen again, if ever. The GOP has dumped conservatives and the nation will move leftward.
Question is, do people want to vote for moving it in that direction by fooling themselves that its going to be just this time and then we will have a conservative?.
He has declared entitlement reform one of his top priorities. He may have to yell "F you!" at a few senators but he is the one person in the world most likely to get 'er done.

If the writer wants to persuade conservatives, the use of quotation-marks (as if concerns about who is and isn’t “real” are absurd), and this denigration of Limbaugh and Dobson — not the way to do it.

More recently, Mr. McCain has told conservatives he would be happy to appoint the likes of Chief Justice John Roberts to the Supreme Court. But he indicated he might draw the line on a Samuel Alito, because "he wore his conservatism on his sleeve." Fund-WSJ
McCain was one of Alito's biggest backers. He is saying that he would choose lower profile justices based on their judicial record rather than their activities in other conservative organizations.
McCain has probably had it out for Alito because Alito wrote the decision in the Wiconsin right to life case that went against McCain and Russ Feingold.

I’ll vote for the guy, as we all should, but it will be a practical vote, not an enthusiastic one.
I’m with you. I will not vote for any of the presidential
hopefuls. I’m and old man and have voted in every election.
I just can’t imagine how people think like Kondrake today
suggesting Colin Powell or Christie Todd whitman for vice-
president.
