BAGHDAD - A U.S. warplane strafed snipers in the southern city of Basra, killing at least 16 suspected militants after Iraqi troops came under heavy fire, the American military said

Iraqi police earlier claimed eight civilians, including two women and a child, had been killed in a predawn airstrike in the Hananiyah neighborhood, a known Shiite militia stronghold. But Maj. Brad Leighton, a U.S. military spokesman, said U.S. and Iraqi special operations forces had identified snipers on several roofs before the strike was ordered.

An AC-130 gunship then opened fire on enemy positions on three roofs.

"Initial reports indicate 16 criminal fighters were killed," he said in an e-mail response to a query by The Associated Press.

Just wait until the new c-130 with the tactical laser is in operation. They’ll be able to fry snipers from a couple of kilometers at least, and probably aim for which portions of the sniper they want to fry. Imagine how eager the JAM would be if all 16 snipers had had their gonads burnt off while getting cut in half by a laser weapon. No virgins for you in the afterlife boys!

Actually, it is very humiliating to them. Another AC-130 flying in Afghanistan in the early fight against the Talaban had a woman sensor operator. The sensor operator coordinates with the ground controller to put the bullseye on the target for the gunner. The ground controller had an Afghan government interpreter with him, and they were broadcasting the woman's voice over to the Talaban on a captured Talaban radio and taunting the Talaban with remarks like "You are no fighters, the Americans are sending their women to fight you." According to the ground controllers, it was very humiliating to the Talaban, especially when the woman sensor operator said; "On target... FIRE", and something blew up in the Talaban's face.

Looks more like a 7.62mm GAU-2 mount in an HH or MH-60. The AC-130 doesn’t deal in anything less than 20mm. IMHO
