Some mornings I wake up and, for a minute or two, I think that I must have been dreaming that there are conservatives who hate John McCain so much that, come November, they intend to stay home and let Bill Clinton’s wife or Jeremiah Wright’s surrogate nephew become president of the United States. But then I realize it’s not a dream, and that’s when the nightmare really begins.
Recently, I wrote a piece in which I stated a few of the reasons why I think McCain should be elected. I ended with a notion for a bumper-sticker: “Better an Imperfect Republican Than a Perfect Socialist”. But, still, I heard from a number of disgruntled right-wingers who vowed not to sully their principles by helping to elect a candidate they regarded as indistinguishable from Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.
I will repeat for the rest of you what I replied to these people. Granted, I don’t agree with Sen. McCain about amnesty for illegal aliens. But his position is no worse than that of the Democrats, and at least I’m confident that he’s opposed to the illegals having the right to vote in our elections. Democrats, as we all know, are for universal suffrage -- and that includes felons locked up in jails and people buried in cemeteries.
On the plus side of the ledger, McCain has never voted to increase taxes. Initially, he voted against Bush’s tax cuts, but that was because he wanted them tied to cuts in spending. However, when he lost that battle, he voted to make the tax cuts permanent. He is also leading the fight against earmarks.

His numerous gaffes during Middle East trip, with Lieberman having to whisper answers to him, revealed he has mental issues. He admitted he knows little about the economy, and he has missed around 56% of the Senate votes.
Now his contact with radical Muslims is another strike against him. His lies are like those of a sociopath. How can anyone trust him with running the country?

Tom Coburn of Oklahoma might be a good choice, or Mark Sanford of South Carolina.
Romney would probably drive away more voters than he would attract. If McCain's main problem with the base is the perception that he is a RINO, it doesn't help to pick another RINO (with a worse record on important issues) as his running mate.
I look at this way - choice is to have the engineering firm (preferably an experienced and trusted one) to look after a tear in the dyke.... and until they show up...

I do not call in Hillary or Obama to hold an expensive meeting to get outsource bids from ten different national and international corporations and hold union negotiations while the leak gets bigger.

After all the nasty things I’ve ever said about John McCain( and I firmly believe them to this day) at this point in time the dims have so putrefied the race that I will now pull the lever for him and NOT hold my nose. Although I would have personally preferred a Thompson/Hunter or Hunter/Thompson ticket.
you are right, to control any of them including McCain we need a Republican Congress and Senate. I am supporting my Republican candidate for Congress.
Love the author, but he hasn’t convinced me of anything. He left a lot out of the McCain record. McCain can destroy what hillary cannot touch: the GOP. It may already be lost anyway, but McCain will make it a sure thing.

He opposed the Bush tax cuts because he believed they were tilted too heavily toward the “rich.”
Mr. McCain sometimes lets slip a certain socialist class-warfare mentality that is disturbing.

Particularly, now that the Bushies have decided that their final gambit (or hot poker up our as*) will be "reform" of the regulation of the financial markets. That can only mean one thing. The Bushies want us to bend over again, and that won't be good for anyone. We definitely don't want one of the Keating 5 to finish up the damage that the Bushies don't finish.
The solution to bad government is never more government.
While McCain is a problem, the real problem would be four more years of the GOP as it's currently composed.
A potential problem is that if the Rats win the White House this year (which is likely), who will the GOP have in 2012 to win it back? Is there another "Bob Dole" waiting in the wings. Hope not.

The alternatives (voting for one of the other two) or worse: not voting, are abdicating the responsibility for doing what you can in a positive manner.
The candidate representing your party is the only vote and to coach people into doing otherwise is wrong.
This is my first U.S. vote and I’ll do my best by voting - I’ve waited long enough.
