Muslims students at the University of Miami have organized for the Islamic call to prayer, broadcasted each Friday afternoon this month from Richter Library's clock tower in commemoration of Islamic Awareness Month.
The call to prayer, or Adhan, is spoken in Arabic and is meant to resonate throughout the area.
"It serves as constant reminder of when we have to pray, because prayer itself is a reminder of our religion and how we practice it," said Selima Jumarali, the vice president of the organization.
According to the teachings of Islam, Muslims are to pray five times a day. In Muslim-majority countries, the call is usually performed live by an individual and is heard before every prayer.
Friday afternoon was chosen as the time to play the call because "it revolves around the day of congregational prayer," Jumarali said. Like Saturday for Jews or Sunday for Christians, Friday "holds strong significance for Muslims," she said.
Outside the library last Friday, students listened during the three-minute recording.
Kaleena Salgueiro said that although she could not understand the words in Arabic, the call was "pretty" and "very melodic." She said it reminded her of chanting in a monastery.
Razan Alif, who is Muslim, was also sitting outside and heard the prayer call.
"You always hear church bells ringing, but you never feel the existence of the Muslim community on campus," she said.
When asked whether they thought the Friday prayer call should be continued even after the month, many replied "why not?"
Regardless, Jumarali expressed her gratitude toward the administrators for allowing this expression to be displayed.
"It brings true variety to the university and open appreciation to diversity, especially in these times when people have misunderstandings of Muslims and who we are," she said.

And what percentage of them, do you believe would rise up and start killing non-Muslims? Most are here to get away from the crazy Muslims.
I agree with many of your posts on this thread...
THE CAMEL’S NOSE UNDER THE TENT, YOU MEAN?
I think he is one, which is why he is ignoring the facts.
You really believe that, don't you. You should go visit Michigan sometime, and see how they are "getting away from islam".
But Obama is not a Muslim.
He said so. /sarcasm
According to my daughter [and two of her Arabic dictionaries] "ilah" is arabic for god/deity with a small "g" while Allah is THE God, i.e., the One and Only. Allah akbar. This jibes with your statement, but it is dfficult, but not impossible, to make that distinction in English. "I testify that there is no God except God." The first god should not be capitalized.
Do you speak Arabic? My daughter has only been studying it for two years at the university level, so you may have a better comprehension and understanding of the language. She can read and write arabic fairly well, but her speaking is not quite fluent yet.
Why should anyone have to listen to that savage crap on the public dime? You think it's ok to be advocating Islam 4 times a day to a populace that mainly isn't? Do you know what the call to prayer says? You should if you've read through this thread. Either you are a Islam sympathizer or you'll make a darn good dhimmi when the time comes.
HA...but they do NOT live in the 21st Century...at least not by their behavior and actions....
He either is or is a good little dhimmi. I tell you what Nate, I don't know how long thinking Americans are going to put up with this savagery in our own back yards. I am genuinely concerned.
I've never harmed another person intentionally ('cept maybe playing ball) and I have never intentionally destroyed another man's property. But I gotta tell ya, some of the thoughts I've had in the past few years make me not seem like myself. I fear that less level heads are going to make things bad in the near future.
“You always hear church bells ringing, but you never feel the existence of the Muslim community on campus,” she said.”
It would have been helpful if the paper had said whether or not those bells were being rung from a church actually located on the campus. If NOT, then tell the Mooslims to go make their religious noises from a building not funded by the taxpayers, just like everybody else.
Read what I said...I did not say they are here to get away from Islam, I said to get away from the crazy Muslims. There is a difference. People came to America to get away from the fanatical religious zealots in Europe, when our country was started.
You are either the frog in the pot or the imam with your hand on the burner knob.
“I said to get away from the crazy Muslims”
What makes them crazy muslims? The murderers are the ones who are actually following their “religion.” Their book tells them to kill.
The campus isn’t that big, and I don’t believe many people will hear it anyway. In Miami, most people are in their cars, with the AC on, windows up and talking on a cell phone. I am sympathetic to all religions, not any specific ones. Perhaps if we heard from some of the local churches in Miami, we could find out how many people really are against it. I’m guessing not that many care or even know.
