why would God [?] put Jesus through the torment of the cross

That is a slippery slope. I stopped asking myself why God might do this or that long ago. God does what he does because He is God. He, and He alone, defines what is right and what is good.

This is a hypothetical discussion about whether or not God may offer salvation to a Jew or a Hindu. Certainly God may.

But, if the hypothetical is directly answered in scripture, as quoted previously, one must choose on the side of scripture. This assumes, of course, that you accept the premise of Sola Scriptura, and recognize it's divine inspiration. As Paul told Timothy, "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:"
