JUAREZ, Mexico (CNN) -- A deadly trade is occurring along the U.S. border with Mexico, federal officials say -- a flood of guns, heading south, used by drug thugs to kill Mexican cops.
In Mexico, guns are difficult to purchase legally. So, officials say, weapons easily purchased in the United States are turning up there.
"The same routes that are being used to traffic drugs north -- and the same organizations that have control over those routes -- are the same organizations that bring the money and the cash proceeds south as well as the guns and the ammunition," says Bill Newell, a special agent with the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

“You know, if the world just banned ALL killer guns and SUVs, it would be a much safer place!!!” /libbie rant off
Mexico should build a wall.
The U.S. is building a wall....in Egypt.
Maybe Congress should pass a law outlawing the sales of cop killer guns and bullets in Mexico.
Maybe Mexico should beef up their border security.
Hey, Drew...Johnny....easily purchased, hmmm? What say ya put that to the test here in CT?
Lemme know how that works out for ya.
Then, after your NRA class, the 5-8 weeks (IF your lucky) waiting period and $200 bucks when it's all said in done. Come show me your new, easily purchased handgun, ok?
So, I'll see you in the July - August timeframe.
Interesting. We have this surplus of “cop killer” guns and ammunition and we’re not killing cops. The Mexicans aren’t allowed to have these weapons and they are killing cops faster than they can be replaced. Must be one of those cultural things where we haven’t caught up with advances in other parts of the world.
Horse hooties! Mexico needs to get its act together. Any country that is afraid of arming its citizens needs a revolution to throw out all the patrones. The dirty problem in Mexico is that the criminal patrones are the ones getting armed. The government patrones are too weak and too corrupt to defeat the criminal patrones or even distinguish themselves as the good guys. Meanwhile, in typical, whining, Mexican tradition, they blame the US.
One recent seizure in a Yuma, Arizona, storage locker yielded 42 weapons and hundreds of rounds of .50-caliber bullets already belted to be fed into a machine gun-style weapon.
The guns confiscated included AK-47 rifles and dozens of Fabrique National pistols. The semiautomatic pistols fire a 5.7-by-28 millimeter round, which is technically a rifle round, according to the ATF. Newell says the round has a special nickname in Mexico. "It's called 'mata policias,' or 'cop killer,' " he says.
They say this like it's a bad thing. Considering that Mexican cops have a reputation not all that different from Mexican banditos.
So true. Just our lagging culture.. Sigh...
I know. I have a bunch of guns capable of killing anyone or almost anything, including cops...and they aren’t doing anything by themselves!!!
Hmmm! I can walk into my gun shop in Texas and walk out the door with whatever I can afford in MINUTES. What makes you think CT guns are going south?
Besides, what makes anyone think that any of these weapons are from local gun shops purchased like you our I would buy one?
You know what we need? More “smuggler-killing guns.”
Ummmmmmmmmm, WHERE did I say that or anything remotely like it?
Bull pucky. Here is a 5.7 x 28 cartridge between two other popular pistol cartridges, 9mm on the left and .45 ACP on the right:
Anyone using belt-fed .50 BMG ammo isn't plinking, they're using a crew-served weapon. I'd love to have one myself, but hey, guess what? It'd be illegal.
Sorry. A random thought that I let slip through before I clarified what I wanted to say. The point is that I don’t think very many of these weapons are from gun shops so your idea of claiming they are not easily available doesn’t wash.
Since when does a smuggler, needing a mass quantity, walk into a local gun shop, fill out the proper forms (CT) or do an instant check, and walk out the door with a few hundred arms?
I agree with you
so your idea of claiming they are not easily available doesnt wash.
My idea is in fact the truth....buyiung a handgun in CT is not an easily done. I don't make that claim for anywhere but CT. If you don't have a CCW, you ain't getting one in CT. Period. You can get a long gun, but you'll have to wait 2 weeks while they do a background check.
Now, doe that sound like it's easy?
Yeah, I know what you mean because I have that same problem. I have tried and tried to train them properly and I still get no good results. My guns simply refuse to go out and kill people without my help.
Maybe that's because they're not true "assault weapons", whatever that media-created term means. I'm sure a true "assault weapon" would be much more obedient when I ordered it to kill a nun or wipe out a room full of school kids.
***Now, doe that sound like it’s easy?***
No, not easy for YOU. But that doesn’t have anything to do with the claim that these weapons are easily available. You have already agreed that they are not being purchased legally in gun shops. So, any point you have about gun shops is irrelevant. Besides, I’ve already pointed out that weapons may be purchased easily and within minutes here in Texas. And we are a border state.
