Boston Globe: "Lasting harm feared in Democrats' battle"

Some Democratic Party leaders are growing more concerned that the protracted, caustic fight for the presidential nomination will cripple the eventual nominee, and there are new signs they have reason to worry.

More party leaders are saying that the increasingly personal crossfire between the Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama campaigns serves only to write the script for Republican ads in the fall and to give John McCain, the presumptive GOP nominee, a head start in framing his candidacy.

While the Democrats have been arguing almost daily the past two weeks about each other's electability and integrity, McCain has visited Iraq and other countries in the Middle East and Europe, received the blessing Tuesday of Nancy Reagan, and yesterday delivered a sweeping address on foreign policy.

"There's nothing like a two-way Democrat suicide pact to make it easy for McCain to go off on a grand statesman tour," Mike Murphy, a Republican strategist who once worked for McCain, said yesterday.

A Gallup poll released yesterday indicated that 28 percent of Democrats supporting Clinton said they would vote for McCain over Obama in November, while 19 percent of Obama's backers said they would vote for McCain over Clinton.

Polls suggest that McCain is even or has a narrow lead over both Democrats, and CNN polls also indicate increasing unrest in the Democratic Party. The percentage of Clinton voters who say they would be upset if Obama received the nomination has jumped from 35 percent in January to 51 percent this month, while the percentage of Obama supporters who say they would be upset if Clinton got the nod has risen from 26 percent to 41 percent.

Remember how G. Gordon Liddy called John Dean Judas?

And now the ragin cajun, James Carville, called Bill Richardson Judas for endorsing Obama instead of Hillary.

Hillary and her henchmen remind people of Nixon and his political operatives.

Obama has the most votes. It is statistically impossible for Hillary to catch up.

Her last chance is to get the Michigan and Florida delegates. Being a Clinton, i.e. ruthless, she'll take it. Only the Dims could invent a system where two big states, at least one of which is a swing state, would be deprived of votes at their convention. Now that the "redo" is done, there is no way this gets resolved without very, very bad feelings.

“The “inside information” consensus over at DU is that the DNC will be rolling out one celebrity superdelegate after another that will publicly endorse Obama.”

Whether they want to or not. The Obama people, on every board I’ve visited, are truly frightening, deluded individuals. They assume these celebrity superdelegates (aka Al Gore) will automatically back Obama because he’s soo wonderful and there’s bad blood between Gore and Clinton. I rather think he’ll stay silent until the convention, and try to be a neutral party in determining what happens with Florida, since, Like Hillary “he wuz robbed!”

It’s the money. No donations to her campaign and she will quit.

For the first time, many of the nutroots are being exposed to how Democrat insider-politics REALLY works.
And seeing thier little kum-bah-yah fantasies blowing up in thier faces is a simple joy...

Yes, it is an eye opener to see how sausage and Democratic politics are really made. I'm not sure I will ever be able to eat breakfast again.

But, on a lighter note, Donna Brazile says that even the pledged delegates, who are supposed to represent the will of the voters in the primary states, are not bound to vote in the end for their pledges. So all the delegates are really in play here. Most will vote as they should, but who knows? The phone bill for the Democratic strongarms must be horrendous right now. They must be calling every delegate and reading them the manifesto.

"This family has been good to you. Has this family ever turned their back on you? No. Now is the time when this family will soon ask something from you. This is your time to give back to the family. We stick together, kapisch? And do not ever, ever discuss family business outside this house. I know you'll do the right thing. That's why you're a made man. You were made because you're loyal to the family, and the family is loyal to you. This would not be a good time to make a mistake. Are we clear? Good. I'm sending some choice tickets and a couple other things over with Vinny. Some good Havana cigars. Enjoy them. Who's your daddy? That's right."
