The Sioux were one of two expanding military powers on the northern Great Plains. They drove the Kiowa out of the Black Hills around 1775 [Yes, the ‘Sacred Black Hills’, central to their cosmology], and drove the Crow off the Powder River buffalo range either during or shortly after our Civil War. The did a number on the Pawnee, Mandans, Arikaras, Shoshone, and almost everyone they ran into except the Cheyenne and Arapaho, who were their allies, and the U.S Army. Sioux is a contraction of a Chippewa [Ojibway] word meaning ‘snake’
Wonder if old Ward is gonna get into any of that, or how Lincoln's pardoning of almost all the Santee Sioux from Little Crow's War equals genocide. What a putz.
