Yeah, he could have been out blasting this story all over the place a month ago, and instead it took somebody prodding it out of him. I'm guessing thought that he was also a bit upset/mad and/or embarrassed about the thing, as are many who were there.

What I don't get - if she thought it was so damned dangerous, why would she knowingly put her young daughter in that kind of danger?

This is the real killer and the media is not saying it or at least not clearly. “The world’s smartest woman” is stupid enough to tell a lie that, if it were true, would be even worse because she is saying that her husband would send her AND THEIR DAUGHTER to a place that is “too dangerous for the President” and she would be willing to take her daughter there! How stupid can this woman be? If she were a Republican she would have had to commit ritual suicide long ago.
