In a backroom deal just prior to the Christmas break, Congress passed the omnibus Appropriations bill which included the Hutchison Amendment that gutted the Secure Fence Act. Her amendment essentially guaranteed that the DHS didn't have to build the fence! For more click here.
After Grassfire broke the "Secure Fence Hoax", key members of Congress took action in an effort to "undo" what the Hutchison amendment did, by restoring deadlines and double fence mandate for the entire 854 miles of border.
Two bills have already been introduced that Grassfire is supporting. Each of these bills demand Congress make good on their original promise to build the border fence:
H.R. 4987-Fence By Date Certain Act (Jones R-NC)
H.R. 5124-Reinstatement of the Secure Fence Act of 2008 (Hunter R-CA)

Below is an email I received from Steve Elliot regarding building the fence. The Petition is free. The next page will ask for a donation but obviuosly you are not required to give money.
Our research team just got off the phone with one of our key contacts in Rep. Duncan Hunter's office and learned more disturbing news about the border fence.
According to our contact, the fence-gutting provision that was put into the omnibus spending bill just before Christmas also causes the Department of Homeland Security's authority on constructing new border fencing to expire at the end of this year.
In essence, the sun sets on the border fence on December 31 of this year! In fact, our contact tells us the bill language could be interpreted as a prohibition against any fence construction after December 31 of this year.
Here's the exact provision from H.R. 2764:
"In carrying out this section, the Secretary of \
Homeland
Security shall --
"(i) identify the 370 miles, or other mileage determined by
the Secretary, whose authority to determine other
mileage shall expire on December 31, 2008, along the southwest border where fencing would be most practical and effective..."
Think about what this means...
The next President -- whether it be Obama or
Clinton or McCain -- will have no clear legal authority to build any of the border fence at all...
We will have a pro-amnesty president who not only doesn't want to build the double-layer fence, he or she legally does not have to!
As a result, this fall's elections could prove less important for border security than what you and I do right now to restore theSecure Fence Act.
+ + Please notify your friends about your petition
In three weeks, Ron De Jong and I will take part in a major press conference with Members of Congress on Capitol Hill to present your petition to Restore the Secure Fence Act.
Right now, we have 117,969 signers. We simply must have 250,000 petitions in three weeks.
Please forward this message to 10 or 20 friends today and ask them to join you in signing the petition to restore the Secure Fence Act.
http://www.grassfire.net/r.asp?u=5542&PID=15642605
Again, what you and I do NOW could prove more important for border security than the November elections.
Thank you so much for signing the petition and spreading the word.
Steve Elliott, President Grassfire.org

This is important. The biggest threat to this country comes from the open borders and the hordes of illegal aliens and immigrants from enemy countries who roam across the land.

I didn't put in my phone number. Try putting in as little information as possible and see what happens. Don't sign it if it rejects what little you filled out and you feel uncomfortable filling in more.

No kidding. This is a “build my spam list” petition. Anytime they ask for anything more than your zip code, the purpose is to build a spam/fundraising list.
They could care less about the damn petition.

” I didn’t put in my phone number.”
They don’t want your phone number, they want your ADDRESS. Worth a lot of money in the mailing list biz.

Anyone advocating a petition that asks for your address, while maybe sincere, is not doing FReepers any favors.
DO NOT TAKE PART IN ANY PETITION THAT ASKS FOR MORE THAN YOUR ZIP CODE.
These people are mining FR for fundraising purposes, and not all their own. Jim expressly prohibits people taking advantage of FR this way.

Well, you’ve found a way to circumvent the system, it doesn’t mean the creators of the petition were insincere in their motivations.
Believe me, these petitions MEAN NOTHING. Politicians, if they ever even get delivered, use them to line their bird cages.
Why would someone take part in an effort that is disengenuous at best and more than likely only produced to build address lists the owner can sell 100 times to others? A good mail list is much more valuable as a property to sell than it ever will be to the original owner.
I know about this stuff. Maybe others who know as well will chime in and confirm my statements.

This petition will never see the light of day and even if it does is completely useless.
Why waste your time?

I apologize for speaking on your behalf. That being said, any petition that includes more then a zip code is a ruse. If people want addresses, let them earn it and not engage in smoke and mirrors.
There is far too much corruption in the conservative movement. It is filled with charlatans whose only goal is to generate revenue to pay salaries and goodies and provide little else in terms of measureable achievement. One might opine “caveat emptor” but too much support is siphoned off by these organizations while fledgling effective organizations go wanting because they refuse to engage in such unscrupulous activities nor “play the game” created by some of the most notable, and scurrilous, of the “conservative movement” of the past 40 years.

The petition asks for too much personal information. I advise that Freepers not sign it.

You are an exemplary example Jim. You created this thing called Free Republic out of nothing, scratched by for along time and now you operate on a razor thin budget that takes in just what is necessary to keep it going.
There are organizations out there that take in 10, 20, 50 times as much money and produce nothing of value. You have accomplished 1000 times more than many of these bloated pigs.
FR should be in the business if helping and nurturing the groups whose goals are sincere, who want to make a difference and not just pad a salary or expense account.
That’s what I got into it for and I know you did to.
That being said, I’m not making any allegations about grassfire, I don’t know enough about them to do so and I’ve always had respect for Steve Green. But I do know about these faux petitions and anyone engaging in them is perpetrating a hoax on their supposed supporters and show no respect toward them.
