True, and what’s entangling is it’s not a clear-cut military-style war, but nation-building, security, etc. It’s great our Military can provide what is basically humanitarian aid to Iraq, but is it worth their lives? They are killing terrorists there too, so that’s good. I’m not saying I’m against Iraq intervention, but way back after 9/11, a friend of mine whose an expert on middle east said the effective thing to do was bypass these two-bit countries and just take over Saudi Arabia. Regardless of the international outrage, int’l law, just take it over! The rest of them would fall in line. We’d be done by now.

Alliances with people who share our values is no problem. However, even our alliances with close allies might entangle us in unwanted alliance if they aren't as careful as we are. Those entangled alliances can still cause a domino effect, like WW1.
