The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill has provoked furious dissent from MPs and Church leaders.
Hybrid embryos
The Bill permits the creation of hybrid or "chimera" embryos, where human DNA is inserted into an animal cell for research. Implanting them into a woman or animal will be forbidden and embryos must be discarded after use. Pro-life campaigners and Catholic leaders are bitterly opposed.
Abortion
The Bill has provisions to allow amendments to the Abortion Act 1967. MPs are expected to push for a reduction of the 24-week limit to 20.
Embryo screening
Embryos created in fertility treatment can be screened for certain genetic diseases but parents will not be allowed to choose embryos that will develop an abnormality, a clause that has angered deaf parents who want a deaf child. Sex selection is also banned, except to avoid serious gender-related disabilities.
'Spare parts' babies
Embryos can be tested for compatibility with that of a child suffering from a serious medical condition then implanted into a woman. Stem cells from a new child's umbilical cord, bone marrow or "other tissue'', but not a whole organ, could then be used to treat the sibling.
Rights for gay couples
Gay couples who conceive through donated sperm, eggs or embryos will be able to register as parents on birth certificate. Two-mother families will be legally recognised.
Rights for sperm donor children
At the age of 16, children conceived from donated sperm or eggs will be able to request information about the donor and donor's other offspring. They will also be able to find out if they are related to someone they propose to marry.
I was wondering when this would become more prominent. Damn, we live in nightmarish times. All those sci-fi freak movies just might come true.
That's the whole deal.
Using living embryonic human beings as experimental animals is monstrous; but it is no less monstrous to create human-animal combinations for the same purpose.
In any country where abortion is legal, it is of course also legal to engage in lethal experimentation, including the laboratory begetting and destruction of a variety of life-forms with human components.
The Nazi doctors in that place where there is wailing and gnashing of teeth are only envious that they didn't live two generations later, when they could do whatever they wanted to do with the political backing and financing of the British government.
These experiments are already compromising human genetic identity, human species distinctives, and the dignity of human beings per se.
God bless the defenders of His Image in the human race. God bless and strengthen those British Catholic MP's.
