Term caps and education highlight the Senate hopeful's limited record in the House.
Bob Schaffer spent six years in Congress and says his top political accomplishment was leaving office.
In addition to keeping a promise to voters that he'd serve only three U.S. House terms, the former congressman quickly added that he's also proud of his record on agriculture, education and the economy.
Schaffer...in a race expected to be one of the country's most competitive.
During the Fort Collins Republican's three terms, he focused on a few key interests, with education reform topping the list. He voted the Republican line in most cases and worked with then-House Speaker Newt Gingrich to push GOP unanimity.
Democrats charge Schaffer was one of the House's most conservative members, taking extreme positions that put him in the minority of his own party.
The Republican National Legislators Association named Schaffer 1995 legislator of the year for his state work. After election to Congress in 1996, Schaffer was elected president of his freshman class.
"You've got to be there five or six years before you understand where the bodies are buried, how the process works," said House Republican Leader John Boehner...
Schaffer defended his record, saying that instead of authoring bills, he asked others to include Colorado-centric language in legislation.
Schaffer also said a term-limits pledge caps what a lawmaker can do because Congress rewards seniority.
"You couldn't even think about being a subcommittee chair until you were into your fourth term," he said. "When you're a subcommittee chairman, the first thing you get to do is set the agenda. That's a huge advantage."
He said he doesn't regret the pledge, "but I wouldn't do it again."

I urge people to donate to the Shaffer campaign. I have. I am not donating to RNC because they will also give my money to RINO libs. Schaffer is running against Mark Udall who I call “Marx Udall”. His brother is a member of the “Progressive Caucus” in the house, a code name for communist. Marx Udall is no less a communist. Please help take this elitist down.
Maybe Pete Coors can jump in the race and loose it!
Polls show a very close race, with Mark Udall holding a very narrow lead. But Schaffer is badly underfinanced and needs all the help he can get.
The riots at the Denver DNC convention will help turn people off to the commies, but Schaffer still needs help!
I’m down here in the Springs and trying to figure out a candidate is some race to focus on and work for, and thinking it will be Schaffer.
I am near Golden and have decided that the Schaffer race is the biggest one I can help with. I have also contributed to John Thune. But, for planting signs and all that I will be working for Schaffer all the way.
I’ve sent him a little and will send more when I can.
