I think it would be a huge mistake for McCain to tap Mitt for his VP. The talk radio hosts on the right may think he’s a conservative’s conservative, but many, like me, aren’t convinced.
How I pray...
Who would be your choice then? I don’t think Fred has shown any interest in running for either Presidency or Vice-Presidency. My take is that McCain gets 70% to 80% on issues dear to me. Romney would add another 10%-15% making it 90+%. Giving the fact that I don’t see a 100% guy (and that guy would not probably be 100% for the rest of us), I’m OK with John/Mitt ticket.
You could put Fred on there, but I don’t think he could bring balance to the ticket. His entire world view is conservative. McCain’s is not. As President, McCain’s would win out. Mitt at least has economic credentials that McCain lacks and could move into the lead in advancing those policies.
“A McCain-Romney ticket makes political sense for the GOP.”
Yes it does. Likewise McCain-Lieberman.
Putting a Republican or a conservative up as VP would be way too much contrast.
They need to put up someone who is like McCain, to lessen the contrast between him and conservative Republicans.
It may work.
Mitt is not a Conservative.
Most of us are..not the 100%ers.
I doubt that McCain will pick Romney.
Darn shame because McCain/Romney would be a good ticket.
McCain is much too full of himself to actually use some sense in picking a veep. Look at who he chooses to hang out with and work with in the Senate.
Romney would be perfect, if the goal is to keep evangelicals at home on election day.
Conservatives love him,...
I'll have some of whatever he's drinking. The only thing conservatives saw in Romney was that he wasn't as bad as McCain.
What Romney DOES offer is economic expertise to help balance McCain's economic ignorance. Because of that I would have ultimately put on the clothespin and cast my vote for Romney in a general election, if that scenario had unfolded.
But the VP position is almost entirely symbolic, and the message here is "conservatives need not apply".
I would much rather see a McCain/Hunter ticket or a McCain/Thompson ticket but doubt that would ever happen, they are conservative.
These days, a VP pick is best used as assassination insurance.
I’m convinced the reasons the libs have not tried to kill the President is that Cheney would succeed him.
McCain can’t pick a conservative for his VP - otherwise he’d have more heated policy differences with his own second than he will debating against the Dem.
Captain Queeg doesn’t need a ticket balancer. He needs a guy who can replace him if he croaks in office. I don’t think McCain is going to win, but if he does, it is by no means certain he’ll last a full 4 years. He’s old and sick. He needs to pick someone exceedingly well qualified to assume the presidency if McCain dies or becomes to ill to serve.
On the day that Romney signed a permanent "assault" weapons ban in Massachusetts, he said, Deadly assault weapons have no place in Massachusetts. These guns are not made for recreation or self-defense. They are instruments of destruction with the sole purpose of hunting down and killing people.
I wonder if we can come up with a lower rating than an "F-" for such a prospective ticket.
"Z-" perhaps...
Mitt offers a few things, actually. There is the economic-expertise bit, but also he provides relative youth and health—which especially matters in McCain’s case—and a demonstrated ability to contribute on the fund-raising side.
I think Mitt’s sadly opportunistic, but if McCain could be persuaded in this case I think it might work. Current polls suggest McCain’s got the South sewn up, so Mitt would be of use in Michigan and maybe another cusp state or two.
