EU parliament Pres. says Olympics boycott should be considered

A boycott of this summer's Beijing Olympic Games should be considered if China does not re-evaluate its actions in Tibet, the president of the European Parliament said in an interview to be published in a German newspaper on Sunday.

"Beijing must decide. It must negotiate with the Dalai Lama immediately," Hans-Gert Poettering told the mass circulation Bild newspaper. Poettering added that boycott measures were justified, if there was no attempt at reconciling the differences.

"We should not exclude the possibility of a boycott of the Beijing Olympics. We want a successful Games, but not at the price of the cultural genocide of the Tibetans," he said.

Poettering, a member of the conservative Christian bloc in the parliament, said the European Parliament would discuss the situation in Tibet on Wednesday.

It will be easy to order troops from Harbin to fire upon citizens in Lhasa in this way.

No doubt.

The only thing holding back the Chinese government is the Olympics. If the EU and US boycott and ruin the Chinese Olympics, then thee is nothing to hold the Chinese back. In our media eyes, the conflict is about freedom versus oppression. The Chinese public is bombarded with images of Tibetans attacking innocent Chinese civilians walking on the street or riding a scooter, ie ethnic violence against ethnic Chinese (ala blacks attacking white motorists during the post Rodney King verdict in LA). Thus the Chinese troops (mainly Chinese) will kick ass if they are givened the go a head order and the Chinese public will cheer them on. Six million Tibetans against 1 billion Chinese is going to be a lopsided contest. That is why the Dai Lama is urging non violence, because he understands the capability of the Chinese to go ahead with ethnic cleansing if the Communist feels they have nothing to lose. Question is has the situation gotten beyond the Dai Lama’s control and influence (many young Tibetans are ignoring the pleas).

The EU is considering this, and we’re not?

There’s definitely something wrong.

I won't be watching or reading about it. This Olympics don't exist.

China is a punk country run by a bunch of thugs. I bought a pair of shoes made in Vietnam because I figured the money did less harm there than if I bought one of the 99% other shoes that were made in China. These were from a Reebok, Nikki outlet. If anyone knows a brand that mostly gets their shoes from USA, Mexico, Europe, India, Taiwan, Korea, Indonesia, or Vietnam or other non-Chinese country. Please post them.

SAS shoes (made in USA) http://sasshoes.com

The website unfortunately doesn’t let you browse their selection, but check out one of their stores. They are predominately made in the USA and are very comfortable.
