Typhoid is a bacterial infection passed on through eating food or drinking water containing infected feces or urine. It is rare in developed countries.

“overseas” is sometimes used loosely to refer to any foreign country, even Canada. Seeing as the worker was from New York City, I suspect a better surmise might be Asia, Africa or South America, where a lot of unskilled immigrants come from in New York. Far fewer Mexicans and Central Americans in New York relative to other areas (it seems to me).

Given the demographics of aliens in the NYC area and the relative populations of the nations on the chart... the most likely is that he is from El Salvador or the Dominican Republic. New York has a heavy share of both groups.
