President of Colorado VFW Post Charged With Stealing Veteran's Identity

NEW CASTLE, Colo. — A Colorado man is accused of stealing an Army veteran's identity and using it for 24 years to get married, obtain free medical treatment and even serve as president of a VFW post.

Mark Mulcahy, 46, faces felony charges of identity theft, forgery and criminal impersonation. He was being held in the Garfield County jail Friday in lieu of $45,000 bail. It wasn't known whether he had an attorney.

Mulcahy obtained a military retirement document in 1984 in the name of David Keith Anderson of Modesto, Calif., according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

Anderson, also known as David Ronayne, died in a bicycle accident in 2006, the affidavit says.

It wasn't clear if Mulcahy had ever served in the military.

The affidavit says Mulcahy lived under Anderson's name in New Castle, 130 miles west of Denver, and used his identity to have surgery at no charge at the Veterans Affairs hospital in Denver. The upper gastric hernia surgery cost $6,296.

There was a front page article in the Seattle paper about a man who has been using so many ID’s stolen from dead people, that the FBI can’t figure out who he really is. This guy has been doing this since the eighties, also.

Who are these people? What makes people want to be someone else?

When I joined the VFW in 1967 you had to have a DD 214 or be active military, with qualifications, which I was. Have things changed?

“Have things changed?”

Yes. But only for the worse.

“president”..

Sorry.. there is no such thing in the By-Laws of the VFW.

It would be Post Commander, Senior Vice Commander, or Junior Vice Commander.

As for checking the DD Form 214, I was made a member by the then Quartermaster of my post as soon as I became eligible for membership.. without my knowledge no less. My father purchased my Life Membership and it came to my workplace when I was Active duty in the Air Force. I later transfered to a local post and served up the chain to become the Post Commander there.. when I left that area.. I later transfered back to my hometown post again.

When signing people up.. It is best to see the DD Form 214. But there are instances where even those are forged or never shown. But to have a individual do this.. it goes beyond a simple check...

It's weird. As PI, I had come across several phonies claiming to be ex-military, it's a strange phenomena. Read Burkett's Stolen Valor and you'll get a idea of what's happening.

You can usually spot them either by their fantastical stories, inappropriate number/types of awards, medals, recognitions, etc. Even stranger is the propensity to talk about how they've murdered people, committed the most heinous crimes under the guise of "black ops" and sadly, so many people willingly believe these phonies--then feel sorry for them after they've been exposed.

I don't understand the psychosis myself, I just feel satisfied and glad when one is exposed, thereby protecting other real vet's honor, dignity and sacrifices.

There are good sources to double check someone (especially those claiming to be former POWs, MOH recipients, phony SEALs, etc., on line. POW lists are complete, ditto MOH recipients and the SEALs websites can confirm whether or not you have a real one or a phony.

He wants to claim 20 years in the Marines? Then put the SOB in uniform and make him do just that. Going thru boot camp ought to be a lot of fun at 46, especially when the DI’s know who you are.
