Now at the end of their third tour they are preparing to leave: the 1st "Raider" Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division deployed to Al Anbar province 15 months ago as an element of the "surge" force. Its commander, Col. John W. Charlton, is responsible not only for his Army units, but also for Navy, Marine and Air Force personnel operating with them. His area of operations -- AO Topeka -- covers 8,900 sq. miles.

From the outset his focus was Ramadi, the Al Qaeda capital of western Iraq. He described the situation confronting him in a March 13 press briefing:

5 years ago when we went into Iraq, my son was serving under Charleton who then was a LTC, Commanding the 1/29th Infantry Task Force from the 3d Brigade, 3d ID out of Fort Benning. They were one of the lead units that ook the Baghdad Airport. My son is now an SF Captain with the 1st SF Group.

Thank you so much for your son’s courage, bravery, and selfless service to this fine nation. We are what we are today, and where we are today, because of fine young men and women like your son and his colleagues.

And thank you for your service, sir.

The story about TF 3/69 AR illustrates a point that I have been making for a couple of years now.

I reckon that a single Army BCT (or Marine Brigade) with proper air and logistics support can defeat 80% of the world's armies in open battle.

Future NBC Nightly News broadcast, opening moments:

Brian Williams: “Well, it’s finally happened. The American death toll in Iraq has reached 4,000. In our expanded broadcast tonight, we’ll have in-depth reports on how we got into the war in the first place, how many Iraqis have died, the toll the war is taking on families back home, the plight of wounded soldiers trying to piece their lives back together, the massive cost of the war, why Afghanistan has not gone so well because of the President’s focus on Iraq, the unpopularity of the war and how that portends for Republicans, and other war-related matters.

In other news, a massive earthquake has hit the west coast and California has fallen off into the Pacific, scientists report they have found a cure for cancer, and Jesus Christ appeared during a joint session of Congress, took the podium, and answered questions.

Now let’s go to our top story: 4000 dead in Iraq.”

You are absolutely right. You cannot satirize this stuff without using “grim milestone.”

AP Story this morning on hitting the 4,000 mark in Iraq: "BAGHDAD - The overall U.S. death toll in Iraq rose to 4,000 after four soldiers were killed in a roadside bombing in Baghdad, a grim milestone that is likely to fuel calls for the withdrawal of American forces as the war enters its sixth year.

Thar she is--"grim milestone." You nailed it.
