Beijing fears Tibet will figure in US elections

BEIJING: China is worried that the Tibet issue will spill over to the US election debate after Friday’s visit by Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the US House of Representatives, to Dharamsala. Beijing noted that Tibetan monks waved the American flag, which was eagerly acknowledged by Pelosi.

"Pelosi was mainly responsible for the Dalai Lama getting the Congressional Gold Medal in the US last year. We are not surprised by her visit to Dharamsala. But this has happened at a wrong time for China. We are worried the Tibet issue may figure in the US election as candidates may be asked to give their opinion on it," Hu Shushing, director of South Asia Studies at the state-run think-tank, China Institute for Contemporary International Studies told TOI.

Both democratic candidates, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have already expressed concern about the loss of American jobs owing to heavy exports of Chinese goods to the US. The Tibet issue has not yet figured but it is possible that it will be mentioned along with the issue of human rights in the coming days. "She may advise Dalai Lama on the Tibet issue. This really is a form of political interference in China’s affairs," Hu said.

McCain slams Chinese 'mistreatment' of Tibetans

PARIS (AFP) — US Republican presidential hopeful John McCain warned on Friday that Chinese "mistreatments" of Tibetan protestors were inacceptable conduct for a world power.

"One of the first things I would talk about if I were president of the United States today is what's going on in Tibet," McCain told reporters in Paris following talks with President Nicolas Sarkozy.

"It's not correct. The people there are being subjected to mistreatment. That is not acceptable in the conduct of a world power -- which China is."

McCain added: "There must be respect for human rights -- whether it be in Tibet or whether it be in any place else in the world."

"And I would hope that the Chinese would announce that they are actively seeking a peaceful resolution to the situation that exists, which harms not only the human rights of the people there, but also the image of China in the world."

McCain said he had dicussed the situation in Tibet with Sarkozy.

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has called on all sides to exercise "restraint" in Tibet, where Chinese security forces have cracked down on a wave of anti-Chinese protests that erupted nearly two weeks ago.

China’s already bought and paid for the Clintons three time over. They are counting on Hillary and Bill in the WH Pelosi is probably running a good cop-bad cop game for the RATS.
