How do you track stuff like that down? I have Scotch grandfather(greats) and wonder where they came from.

It started with family oral tradition which sparked my interest. I started my research online and eventually went to Virginia to look at court records, but most anything you’d need would be available on the web today. Rootsweb,Genealogy.com, ancestory.com. Virginia history and Southern Families books are also helpful. I met a distant cousin who was also researching and we traded info so that helped the process along. The fact that my surname isn’t particularly common helps a great deal. Talk to your cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents. Chances are someone knows the oral history and it’s a great starting point!
