Very well could be the greatest war plane ever built.
Marines deploy in task-organized units which take "slices" from the entire spectrum of Marine Corps ground combat, aviation and logistics forces. The smallest deployable unit is a Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), which has a ground combat element built around an infantry battalion reinforced with artillery, tanks, assault amphibian vehicles, light armored vehicles, combat engineers, recon, etc.
A MEU's air combat element is built around a Medium Helicopter Squadron with its indigenous CH-46 Sea Knight helicopters. But the squadron is augmented with detachments of other helicopters including CH-53 Sea Stallions, AH-1 Cobras, UH-1 Hueys, plus a detachment of AV-8 Harrier attack jets. And since the 24th MEU is operating deep inland in Afghanistan, it has been task-organized to include a detachment of Marine C-130s to provide it with transport and sustainability. Semper Gumby = Always Flexible.
Larger formations bring larger slices and capabilities. A Marine Expeditionary Brigade includes a Marine regiment reinforced with larger supporting units, and a Marine Air Group composed of multiple squadrons of various types -- including the full mix of AV-8, F/A-18 and EA-6 jets. And a Marine Expeditionary Force includes a full Marine Division, Marine Aircraft Wing and the supporting Marine Logistics Group. During Gulf War I, the Corps task-organized a larger MEF which included two Marine divisions and two Marine Aircraft Wings. So regardless of the size of the Marine unit deployed, it includes slices of the Corps' full array of combat and logistics capabilities.
