TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Gov. Charlie Crist said on Thursday that he opposes the pending "baggy pants" bill that would forbid students to expose their underwear on school grounds.
The governor met with officials of the Florida NAACP to discuss education and development issues, Local 6 News partner Florida Today.
Afterward, Crist and state NAACP President Adora Obi Nweze met briefly with reporters and said they are in agreement on the droopy-drawers issue, which the NAACP fears might be used disproportionately against black and Hispanic students.
Crist said it reminds him of his own school days, when long hair was an issue for boys.
"I dont think we need to get so involved in style," said Crist. He declined to say if he would veto the bill, which has passed the Senate, but added, "let's see if it gets that far."
Sen. Gary Siplin, D-Orlando, the sponsor of the pants bill, was on the Senate floor and could not immediately be reached for comment during the morning session.

"I dont think we need to get so involved in style," said Crist. I don't see why not. Schools have always had dress codes.

I don’t think they should outlaw the ‘droopy drawers’. . .but I also think it should be legal for all the moms to go around pulling up kids’ britches. . . even if it isn’t their kid.

"fears might be used disproportionately against black and Hispanic students. " So I guess the NAACP wants the students of black and hispanic persuasion to present themselves as knuckle draggin', hip hoppin' gang bangin' sub humans?

I’ve read that Crist has a “thing” for drooping drawers /snicker.
If true, his reluctance is perfectly understandable.

Nor do I. But I don't think the government has any business telling adults what they can and cannot wear.
