MSNBC ^ | March 19, 2008 | Alex Johnson

Compact fluorescent light bulbs, long touted by environmentalists as a more efficient and longer-lasting alternative to the incandescent bulbs that have lighted homes for more than a century, are running into resistance from waste industry officials and some environmental scientists, who warn that the bulbs’ poisonous innards pose a bigger threat to health and the environment than previously thought.

This is what disturbes be the most. We are being forced by the gubbmint to do what ‘they’ decide is the best for us, the ‘sheeple’.

I have a van. I read that I will be charged extra taxes, because I do not own a low mileage car. Something here is not right.

It seems to me that there is more government control every day.

I’m amazed that someone who can see a 20kHz flicker doesn’t work for CIA or NRO, or the circus maybe.

Comedy doesn't suit you so don't quit your day job.

If you want to use the damn things knock yourself out. Further, the point of the post is we shouldn't be compelled to use the damn things.

MTBE was added to gasoline in CA to reduce air pollution. Consumers were charged extra to pay for adding MTBE to fuel. Then MTBE was found to pollute groundwater. Taxpayers hit again for clean up. And got to drink poisoned water to boot. Prepare for Unintended Consequences. The well-meaning morons never think these things all the way through.

I was replacing bulbs like mad because I had 128/256 VAC sitting on my electrical service. After a few calls to my utility I got a transformer with 115/230/ as I threatened to go public with it.

what does that mean?

how can I check this out? I’ve got bulbs that are supposed to last for years, burning out in a couple of months.

It’s not true. You do NOT need a Hazmat team for a broken CFL.

Just the desire to live with Mercury poisoning.

Check the spec sheets, the electronic ballasts do their own switching.

As an example, this one has a lamp operating frequency of 45 kHz.

We’re all waiting for LED bulbs. Hopefully soon.

They are here, just not cheap.

Buy a multimeter, set the appropriate range (200V~), and stick the probes in a few wall outlets throughout your house.

If the probes begin to smoke, you’re on the wrong setting!

Perhaps you had older units. They’re still working on the phosphor combinations; the newer ones are very close to incandescents in color so long as they’re shaded (the blue/UV still shows directly) — but I’ve never had one hum.
