Compact fluorescent light bulbs, long touted by environmentalists as a more efficient and longer-lasting alternative to the incandescent bulbs that have lighted homes for more than a century, are running into resistance from waste industry officials and some environmental scientists, who warn that the bulbs poisonous innards pose a bigger threat to health and the environment than previously thought.

Get a Volt meter. First set it on the highest setting which would likely be either 500 or 1000 volts A/C using the highest voltage setting first is for saftey reasons to protect you and the meter. If the needle barely moves back it down a setting to a lower voltage.
There's several ways to check one is on your regular 110 outlet. If it reads below 125 volts you're likely OK. If it reads 128- 130 or higher I would call and complain.
The way you get the other voltage is by reading something like a dryer outlet, range, etc across the two hot conductors. That is two voltages each 125 volts but out of phase with each other. When each individual one is checked to ground you get 125. When checked across each other you get 250 volts.

I'm hoarding them myself :>} This fad will not last long. There are legitimate uses for these bulbs beyond household lighting. What started the stupidity was ones like Walmart C.E.O. Scott forcing a market decision upon consumers in the name of so called green energy. Walmart the likely largest retail seller to consumers is on a shelf space reduction kick. Selling less bulbs at a much higher price achieves that agenda. Selling less bulbs per month means more shelf space for more Made in China crap.
Now if you look up Walamrts so called offical company press releases on the matter it was to be green friendly. In a couple of years Walmart will also push for a mandated disposable light bulb container which will come with the light at a much higher price of course.

Over 30 years ago me and my buddy took a shortcut to the store behind some businesses and we found about 40 real long fluorescent bulbs in a dumpster and we broke every one of them throwing them like spears against a brick wall. As they shattered against the wall they appeared to be going right through.
We had no idea we were ruining the planet but we sure had fun doing it.

The statement says it makes him sick. Who are you to judge that he is not feeling well when under those lights.
I get ill under those lights too.

it is not. I have also read that constant exposure can cause cancer in some individuals.

Everything causes cancer. The leading cause of death is life.
