CHRIS Cox for VP?
The Orange County Register ^ | March 17, 2008 | Robert Novak

Former conservative colleagues in the House of Representatives are boosting Christopher Cox, chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission since 2005, to be Sen. John McCain's vice presidential running mate.

A White House aide under President Reagan, Cox served 16 years as a congressman from Newport Beach and was chairman of the House Republican Policy Committee. He was named as a federal appeals court judge to begin President George W. Bush's administration, but withdrew after Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer of California announced her opposition.

Former Rep. Rob Portman of Ohio, who also was a member of the House leadership before joining the Bush Cabinet, is being promoted for vice president by Washington insiders. But Cox's backers in the House argue that Portman lacks Cox's stature in the conservative movement, which they say McCain needs.

We need a conservative with good financial chops; any other consideration is secondary. If McCain picks such a person, he’ll have chosen wisely.

I was a huge Chris Cox fan till I sat thru one of his speeches. Ugh! There’s part of my brain I still can’t wake up.

I’ve always been a big fan of Cox—I had hoped that he would run for Senate v. Boxer, but I’m not sure what Cox adds to the ticket. California, his home state, looks hopeless and Cox doesn’t have much name recognition. I’d rather see Portman or Kasich (Ohio) or Romney (NH, Mich., Nevada) or Pawlenty (Minn., Wisc.), who might help deliver a key state.

Nothing McCain does is going to help him. He cannot find a person conservative enough to make up for his participation in McCain Feingold, mexican amnesty, and on and on. There isn’t a person that conservative on the planet, and if there were, he would not run with McCain.

Christopher Cox would be an excellent choice. Among his other gifts, he speaks fluent Russian.

Kasich would be a good pick. Everyone knows him and he is a real fiscal conservative who fought the tough fight in the 90’s.

I say no to pawlenty and romney is even worse.

If Cox is a conservative, McCain will not chose him. He's made it clear that he will choose one who shares his beliefs. That precludes the selection of any conservative. Isn't anyone listening to McCain when he says exactly the type of person he will choose?

Cox is a good man. But I’m not sure if a Californian will help. After the screwups of the past 20 years, California is a dead loss for Republicans.

If Hillary or Obama only won two states, which is highly unlikely, one of them would be California. And if it’s a close race, forget it.

He is awesome and always been great BUT he can’t deliver CA and that’s where he is from if I remember correctly.

Romney can deliver Michigan and maybe Ridge can deliver PA.

I met him at a private reception once. I was introduced by my host who said to me: “I want you to meet Chris Cox.” When I said: “Hello Chris, nice to meet you.” you would have thought I had committed a cardinal sin. He didn't say a word about my gaff - he didn't need to. His expression said it all as his ego obviously wanted me to address him as Congressman Cox. Needless to say he wasn't interested in any conversation with me. I'd rather see someone as talented but humble and one who has a true sense of being a public “servant” rather than public master.

It seems to me that Lindsay Graham is actively campaigning for the VP slot.

Former conservative colleagues in the House of Representatives

Kick out the former conservatives. Elect some current conservatives.

Keep you eyes on Tom Ridge. He’s national co-chair and very close to McCain.

McCain needs David Walker, Comptroller General for for his Vice President.
