"Inaugural addresses by Abraham Lincoln and Franklin D. Roosevelt come to mind, as does John F. Kennedy’s 1960 speech on religion, with its enduring vision of the separation between church and state. Senator Barack Obama, who has not faced such tests of character this year, faced one on Tuesday. It is hard to imagine how he could have handled it better.

Handled it better? Sen. Obama equated his grandmother with an anti-semitic racist whose public rants have demeaned this country.

Sen. Obama refused to leave the church where Jeremiah Wright serves as senior pastor.

Sen. Obama did not address the significant areas of agreement between his and Wright's public positions, such as on the war in Iraq.

"Sen. Obama equated his grandmother with an anti-semitic racist whose public rants have demeaned this country."

That jumped out at me! Unless, Obama's grandmother was preaching bigoted, hate filled, anti-American sermons to large white congregations, it was a completely nonsensical comparison. But of course every stupid pundit that got his hands on a microphone yesterday thought it was brilliantly balanced.
