WASHINGTON - Sen. John McCain suggested Friday that the trans-Atlantic alliance join with democracies around the world to forge a New Global Order of peace that would last throughout the 21st century. The Republican candidate for the U.S. presidency said the process should begin at the alliance's April summit meeting in Bucharest, Romania. Stepping up the NATO commitment to Afghanistan is one priority, he said, but that must lead to greater change around the world. McCain expressed his views in a statement distributed by his campaign on the occasion of the 44th annual Munich Conference on Security Policy in Germany. He traditionally has spoken at the conference but stayed home this year to campaign.
He said NATO is building in Afghanistan a global alliance of democracies that can act as a force for freedom and greater prosperity across the globe for decades to come. Part of that will come through its enlargement, he said, which will continue at the April summit with the addition of Albania, Croatia and Macedonia. Others should come later, he said. Still, he said, the future of NATO lies not only in expanding its membership, transforming its mission and deepening its commitments. It lies also in cooperating with states far from our shores, such as Japan, Australia and India. They are proud, powerful and progressive nations committed to the values that have given our alliance such enduring strength, McCain said. In this way, NATO can become the basis for a new global order of peace, one that will last not just for a decade but for the rest of this century. Today we need a rebirth of NATO, a renaissance of the trans-Atlantic relationship to extend peace, prosperity and democracy far into the 21st century.
True democracies should be welcome as members, he said. The United States, Canada and 10 Western European countries established the post-World War II alliance as a mutual defense shield against the Soviet Union. It now has 26 members, including several from the former Soviet bloc in Eastern and Central Europe. In the past, McCain has been critical of Russia but avoided mention in his statement of the main successor state to the Soviet Union. The nearest he came was in suggesting that NATO leaders invite former Soviet republics Ukraine and Georgia to become members, partly because they have difficult neighbors.
Previous comments on Russia have included the recommentation that it be removed from the Group of Eight major industrial countries. He wrote three months ago in the journal Foreign Affairs, Rather than tolerate Russia's nuclear blackmail or cyberattacks, Western nations should make clear that the solidarity of NATO, from the Baltic to the Black Sea, is indivisible and that the organization's doors remain open to all democracies committed to the defense of freedom.
McCain's campaign for president had begun building steam then, but he was not the clear front-runner he is now. In Friday's statement, McCain said Afghanistan is first among NATO's missions toward reinvigoration. NATO is in charge of the military operations there, but the United States is frustrated by the positions of France, Germany and others to keep their troops out of the line of fire. U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates is to address the Munich conference on Sunday. Gates said en route to Munich that he will try to persuade his colleagues not to link the U.S.-led war in Iraq, in which NATO has no official role, with NATO's military effort in Afghanistan. The truth is that we all need to do more, McCain said, not just on the military aide but also in contributing more development and civic aid and in working with the Afghan government on justice and the rule of law.

YOu can’t favor intervention in places like Iraq and Afghanistan and also want the U.S. to go it alone and also expect that we will keep our strength. We need a network of allies we work with, whatever we call it.
Third world status here we come. Please read the tag.
Conservatives who oppose this are pro UN.
I want to know what’s in it for these smuckes.
We should have chucked NATO and joined in a defense alliance with Russia when the USSR fell. Nobody would be strong enough to attack the both of us at the same time.
Instead, we pushed NATO and said we were the world’s only superpower. That automatically made Russia and China into our opposite poles.
Meaning? A set-up for the next world confrontation between
Europe, Asia, and Oceania.
McCain needs to stop touring Europe and head down to the border and actually do something.
I like this idea. Countries like Cuba or Iran demand a voice in international affairs but won’t extend the same right to their own citizens. Chuck ‘em.
If X cannot be done via a collection of independent bilateral agreements, then X should not be done at all. This idea should be scrapped, along with the UN. I'd take a trade (if only because it would place America higher up the the rim of the toilet bowl), but that is not what is in the works. The entanglement borne of the multilateral orthodoxy needs to be extinguished and replaced with a purely bilateral framework for all foreign policy matters.
Could we still have Big Dog status?
McLoser needs to be waterboarded.
‘New world order’
Now, we can see a new world coming into view. A world in which there is the very real prospect of a new world order . . . A world where the United Nations, freed from cold war stalemate, is poised to fulfil the historic vision of its founders. A world in which freedom and respect for human rights find a home among all nations.
- President Bush’s speech to Congress, March 6, 1991 -
(Smokey Robinson when he was with The Temptations) - "Get ready, get ready...."
Ron Paul warned us about this but he was mocked and called a kook. Now it's time to pay the piper....
So will we be leaving the UN?
Because the UN is completely the opposite of democracy.
GLOBALISM PING
I like the idea as long as it includes U.S. out of the UN and UN off U.S. soil!
Has John lost it!! Globalism is a word conservatives do not want to hear from the candidate.
