Report: Navy SEAL to receive Medal of Honor [Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael A. Monsoor]
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | March 17, 2008 | AP

A Navy SEAL who sacrificed his life to save his comrades by throwing himself on top of a grenade will be posthumously awarded the nation's highest military honor.

The family of Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael A. Monsoor will receive the Medal of Honor on his behalf during a White House ceremony, according to a Marine Corps Times report Monday.

The report, which cited an anonymous Department of Defense official, said it was not clear when the medal would be presented.

Monsoor was part of a sniper security team on Sept. 29, 2006, in Ramadi with three other SEALs and eight Iraqi soldiers, according to a Navy account. An insurgent fighter threw the grenade, which struck Monsoor in the chest before falling in front of him. Monsoor, according to the account, then threw himself on the grenade.

Monsoor, a platoon machine gunner, had received the Silver Star, the third-highest award for combat valor, for his actions pulling a wounded SEAL to safety during a May 9, 2006, firefight in Ramadi.

Monsoor, of Garden Grove, Calif., was 25.

Monsoor will be the second member of the Navy to receive the Medal of Honor since the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan began, and the first sailor to receive it for combat in Iraq.

You are thinking of “Lone Survivor” by Marcus Lattrell. I just finished reading this book and I highly recommend it.

Three awards of the Medal of Honor during the War on Terror, all posthumously. Our country is truly blessed to have Men like these.

Both recent SEAL MOH winners received it posthumously. One in Iraq, one in Afghanistan.

I have my problems with the way the Medal of Honor is given out. The military seems to imply that the only way to get the MOH is by dying in the process. While, some times, this may be laudable, it ignores heroics where the winner lives.

There is nothing more impressive that to meet a MOH winner. The way that things go right now, this seems to be becoming a remote possibility.

You are correct, I feel a little ashamed I did not know the correct number of MOH’s awarded.

How come there ain’t no movies about heroic American and Allied troops fightin’ in the War in Afghanistan and Iraq?
We KNOW there are plenty of heroes, doing things that they won’t show in movies ‘cause they’re too hard to believe.

Sometimes, I have this dreadful feeling that Hollyweirdstan ain’t on our side...
