WASHINGTON (AFP) - The United States said Monday it would increase radio broadcasts to Tibet as China clamped down on media coverage of the bloody protests in the Himalayan territory. ADVERTISEMENT
"The violent crackdown by Chinese authorities in Tibet compels us to increase our broadcasts," said James Glassman, chairman of the Broadcasting Board of Governors.
The board is an independent federal agency which supervises all US government-supported, non-military international broadcasting, including the Voice of America (VOA) and Radio Free Asia (RFA).
At present RFA broadcasts eight hours daily to Tibet via shortwave radio. VOA broadcasts four hours daily, also via shortwave.
Each will expand radio programs by two additional hours daily, the broadcasting board said in a statement.
VOA also will double its weekly Tibetan-language television programming from one to two hours via the AsiaSat 3 satellite.

*blink*.
Huh?
Who is that guy who ordered this, and what has he done with President Bush?
Wait... we’re actually taking action against China? Like, not just saying stuff?
Woo hoo.
Let’s see if our government encourages Tibet to declare independence and backs them as they did for the muslims in Kosovo.
Indeed. I wish FR had a “Great, Happy News” sidebar. :)
I saw some film clips today which showed Chinese authorities beating monks and other protesters with canes. Very very sad. But hey - we’re stepping up our radio broadcasts.
Sorry, I must have the happiness of one who expected nothing.
I’m predicting when the illegal Mexican population begins to get restless, we can expect Radio Free Azatlan stations to pop up in Tiajuana, Ciudad Juarez, and Laredo Nuevo.... courtesy of the Chinese.
Apparently you haven't listened to AM radio anywhere near the US Southern boarder. Mexican stations have regularly blasted massive signals in flagrant violation of FCC regulations and nearly 1/3 of the domestic AM stations are now broadcasting in Spanish. During the "Day without a Mexican" protests, they broadcast the vilest propaganda whipping up illegals and Spanish speaking citizens alike against Americans. Wouldn't be surprised if the ChiComs weren't behind it, as they want a porous US border to ship in goods and people from China through Mexico.
I share your optimism.
I hope this is not another broadcast that only wildly speculate the incident.
What we should be doing is shipping weapons across the border.
Be careful what you said. Or do you mean that regions like Basque, Kashmir, Chechnya and Kurdishtan can achieve independence without their own government’s approval? Never bring up something that sensitive that you may get a bullet in your head.
Freedom of speeches is every man-kind deserve to possess. But out of the freedom, we need to have sense in our mind. Looking back at the history, freedom that gone out of control will only end in one way, disaster.
If anyone wants to fight for freedom against a government that represses their freedom, they shouldn’t have to ask for our support...they should have it.
The Basque, Kashmirs, Chechnyans and Kurds just want independence, not freedom. Tibetans on the other hand do and that’s why we should support them.
There you go now, the regions that mentioned won’t be recognise by their own government. And will you and I? Well, I’m truly sorry to brought up this regions as well for I too will be targeted by their country’s nationlists.
Tibet’s matter is still a mystery to all of us, even for I as a fellow Asian. It’s all up to the Chinese government and sometimes, society themselves how wise they can be to decide the fate and future of the Tibetians.
FYI - Mike Powell is a ChiCom with a rather colorful history on FR.
