deported a record number of those caught on the nation's borders last year — more than 280,000 in fiscal year 2007 compared with 186,000 a year earlier.

Right, but the problem is over a million of 'em per year aren't caught at the border.

“More is better at least.”

Lets not kid ourselves here.
If they deported a million illegals tomorrow while failing to secure the borders; what have they accomplished?
Kinda like dipping water out of the Lusitania .

Where’s the fence?

If people know that nothing is going to happen to them then they will keep coming. If we start kicking them out with some prejudice then you slow the flow.

Only one part of the solution though/.....

If you don’t kick them out how do you get them to leave?

Remove the incentive(s) to stay.

Don’t get me wrong, I am all for deporting every one of these illegals BUT if the borders aren’t secured, what have you accomplished? They’ll just turn around and come back...as they’ve been doing for decades and continue to do NOW
The borders should have been secured after 9/11 and deportation of all illegals and foreign muzzies started!

either we are at war or we aren’t!

Oh I quite agree — deportations are a very good thing.

Gotta combine it with cutting off all the welfare freebies, going after illegal-hiring employers (with heavy fines) in earnest, rescinding the anchor baby provisions of the ‘65 Immigration Act, and of course building an effective border barrier.

Well here's a new thought...how about dealing with migrant workers in a rational way instead of driving them underground..unless the success of the war on drugs has convinced you that insantity is not actually doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

I think many of the illegals are leaving on their own. The housing market has tanked, and there’s no work for them.

That very last thing I want is a continuation of the status quo. (See post #11).

As I have been saying on FR for years, do not kid yourself;
the last F.B.I. report I read, MS-13 was present in 42 states and expanding. And MS-13 doesn’t care if you are “legal”, they don’t speak English and they are taking applications!

What you want to do is hit yourself in the head with that hammer a little harder and maybe that won't hurt.

There goes that demand issue showing up again.

Reduce the demand for them and they go home. The unemployment rate would likely stay at 5% even in a recessionary cycle with all of the job opportunities arising from losing illegals.

What I suggested has never been tried, and it would most assuredly solve the problem.

You, otoh, have (not surprisingly) suggested nothing. Care to give it a go rather than flapping your gums like a fool?

“Well here’s a new thought...how about dealing with migrant workers in a rational way instead of driving them underground..”

Nonsense. Naturalized Mexican citizens are at the day labor centers trying to get work. There’s not enough for the legal ones. The illegal aliens need to go home! Underground? Like the millions marching in OUR streets last year? They’re planning another one. These folks have too much free time on their hands.
