Obama church responds in 9/11 row

The church attended by US presidential hopeful Barack Obama has dismissed criticism of its senior pastor over comments he made on race and US policy. Reverend Jeremiah Wright said in 2001 that the 9/11 attacks were like "chickens coming home to roost".

After the remarks resurfaced Mr Obama denounced them as "incendiary" and "completely inexcusable".

But now the church says the attacks on Rev Wright have been made by "external forces" that want to "vilify us".

In a statement released on Sunday, the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago compared the criticism to the assassination of Martin Luther King.

"Nearly three weeks before the 40th commemoration anniversary of the murder of the Rev Dr Martin Luther King Jr", the statement said, "the Rev Jeremiah A Wright Jr's character is being assassinated in the public sphere because he has preached a social gospel on behalf of oppressed women, children and men in America and around the globe".

Rev Wright brought Mr Obama to Christianity, officiated at his wedding and baptised his daughters.

The Democratic presidential hopeful said he had not been present during the sermon at which the pastor made the comments, and that he had looked to Rev Wright for spiritual, not political, guidance.

"I categorically denounce any statement that disparages our great country or serves to divide us from our allies," he wrote.

'God damn America'

In a sermon on the Sunday after the attacks of 11 September 2001, Rev Wright told his congregation: "We have supported state terrorism against the Palestinians and black South Africans, and now we are indignant because the stuff we have done overseas is now brought right back to our own front yards.

"America's chickens are coming home to roost."

In a 2003 sermon, Rev Wright said blacks should condemn the United States.

"God damn America for treating our citizens as less than human", he said.

Mr Obama rejected such comments, but told a town hall meeting on Saturday: "It reminds me: We've got a tragic history when it comes to race in this country. We've got a lot of pent-up anger and bitterness and misunderstanding... This country wants to move beyond these kinds of things."

He said of Rev Wright's comments, which have been widely aired on television and the internet: "If all I knew were those statements I saw on television, I would be shocked".

The Illinois senator is locked in a close race with New York Senator Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination, with the significant Pennsylvania primary vote due on 22 April.

The church's statement isn't helping them. But it's nice to know that the church and Obama are reading from the same script..."he has preached a social gospel on behalf of oppressed women, children and men in America and around the globe"."

"Social" gospel? That somehow makes his hate and non-Christian vitriol ok?

Sorry Trinity...that dog wont hunt.

I don't care how many times Wright said what he did, or what overall percentage of his sermons it represents.

"God Damn America", "The US government created HIV to use on the blacks", "the US deserved 911 chickens coming home to roost", "the US government imports drugs to keep the blacks down", "rich white men rule America to keep the black man down", "Jesus Christ was a poor black man in a white ruled and supremist society", etc., etc. are all clearly hatefilled, disgusting perversions that no Christian preacher, white or black, should make a part of any of his sermons.

The fact is Wright is using such speech and such ideology to perpetuate the plight of those in America, white or black, who buy into this screed.

Wright is what Alan Keyes calls one of the "Masters of the Dream". He claims that Hillary Clinton uses blacks. Well, he is right on that count...but it's the pot calling the kettle black, so to speaik, because he is doing exactly the same thing.

I hope the leaders of this church continue to try and defend this digusting perversion. It exposes them for who they are and keeps this issue as regards Barack Hussein Obama on the forefront...all the way to their convention. Maybe the white superdelegates will steal the election from Obama because of his unebelievable ties to this disgusting hate America crowd and irrevocably split the DNC constiuencies.

I hope so.

Obama's lame attemmpts to distance himself from himself are pathetic and will fail.

Isn’t that statement alone an admission that Obama HAS listened to Wright’s sermons in the past, and that they weren’t all about Jesus and helping the poor?
Just whom was Rev. Wright referring to when he spoke about “oppressed women, children and men in America” and who was doing the oppressing in his speeches?

I still think much of this controversy is being started by the Bull Connor wing of the Democrat party. If the media and the mainline Democrats were happy with Obama as their nominee, this would've been quashed by everyone except maybe Rush Limbaugh and FreeRepublic.

However, the Bull Clinton wing of the Democrat Party is going back to their KKK roots to keep a black man from getting any power.

Personally, I believe preachers say crazy things from the pulpit every week. How else do Christians worship a dark-skinned carpenter-turned-itinerant preacher, who never traveled more than 200 miles from His home, who only traveled out of country once when He was a little boy, who never wrote a book, who never was wealthy, who didn't own a home, and whose only piece of personal property was torn off Him and gambled away by a bunch of garrison soldiers?

The Bull Clinton Democrats are trying to attack a minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. That he has some fringe lunatic beliefs is used to make anti-Christian persecution palatable to people uneasy about attacking someone for their beliefs. After all, this is what the Nazis did....they first arrested the heinous criminals, then went after the mentally handicapped, all to make rounding up and slaughtering Jews more palatable to the German people.

No...Wright brought Obama to Trinity Church of Christ where he could pretend to be a Christian. This church knows nothing of Christ.

“This “church” is exhibiting all the characteristics of a cult at this point.”

I suspect that it has for a long, long, time. Electing Obama is kind of like electing a Scientologist. Most people would believe that the belief structure of their church is way outside the mainstream.

Does that mean it's time to send in Janet Reno and the BATF(&E) to protect the children?

“he has preached a social gospel (SOCIALISM) on behalf of oppressed women, children and men in America and around the globe”.

More hate America speech with this comment, saying America oppresses women and children across the world, and Wright is the lone hero fighting for them.

we’re a divided country, we’re a country that is “just downright mean,” we are “guided by fear,” we’re a nation of cynics, sloths, and complacents. “We have become a nation of struggling folks who are barely making it every day,” she said, as heads bobbed in the pews. “Folks are just jammed up, and it’s gotten worse over my lifetime. And, doggone it, I’m young. Forty-four!”

In that category, the Democratic Politicians are much more guilty than Rev.Wright.

The heartland are watching and they aren't buying. You are done Barak Hussein Obama. You are a stoker of racism. You are no messiah. You will not carry one state in the south.

If Obama gets the nomination, the heartland, middle America, Hispanics, Asians and women (protest vote since Hillary lost) will vote against him. If Hillary wins the nomination, blacks will stay home or cross over and vote McCain to spite Hillary, male vote goes to McCain in all other demographics, Republicans get energized and local, state and federal races favor republicans. Anyway, McCain walks into the Whitehouse.

This response is completely in character with the bilge that this church teaches. It refuses to take responsibility for anything, and blames all its problems on others. Just like Wright encourages the black community to do.

The irony is, if you really want to empower people, you teach them that they are responsible for their own destiny, not that they are at the mercy of others.. It may make them temporarily feel better to blame others, but eventually it weakens them.

“Rev Wright brought Mr Obama to Christianity,”

Just because they call themselves a “. . . Church of Christ” we should not believe that Christian doctrine is preached there. I would love hear a Biblical testimony from Mr. Obama regarding how he came to Christ. And then it would be a blessing to see a demonstration of the new birth (regeneration - Titus 3:5; 2 Cor. 5:17) in the man's existence.
