The federal government is "asleep at the wheel," California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said at a conference in Santa Barbara, Calif., on Friday.
The Republican governor was talking about the fight between the Golden State and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which denied a waiver that would have allowed the state to enforce a law requiring lower greenhouse-gas emissions from vehicles (see Will U.S. Policy Drive Green-Car Tech Away?).
"They dont get it," he said.
While climate-change-fighting activities are happening around the world, he said, the U.S. government has yet to enact national climate-change legislation.
"Theyve really failed in coming up with guidelines and coming up with an energy plan that [reduces our reliance on fossil fuels]," he said. "For three or four decades weve been talking about it, but we havent done anything."
Moving back to the battle over Californias tailpipe-emission standard, Schwarzenegger said he would prefer that states follow a single national standard regulating carbon-dioxide emissions from cars. But if nothing happens, he said, California has to do something.
"I really care about peoples health," he said. "We are killing people right now."

Carbon Tax Terminator?
Adding to a long-standing debate about whether a carbon tax or cap-and-trade system makes more sense, Jeffrey Immelt, CEO of General Electric, said during a speech Wednesday that the word "tax" is too polarizing to be politically acceptable.
Kimberley Strassel, an editorial board member at The Wall Street Journal, asked Schwarzenegger whether a carbon tax would be better than a cap-and-trade system, if it werent for the word "tax."
"In Sacramento, they love talking about taxing everything," he said, to laughter, referring to the possibility of a carbon tax. "Every single tax. Theres not a tax they dont love. I think the people of California sent me to Sacramento to be a sort of tax Terminator."
But isnt a carbon cap and trade also really a tax?
"You can call it whatever you want," Schwarzenegger sidestepped. "We want to make sure we are doing everything we can about global warming."

"The people who dont believe in global warming are those that dont believe in the globe," he said. "They think the world is flat.
Another one—just for you. ;-)
Ahnold needs to get the heck out of California, for about 20 years. His mind has been polluted.
And screw up some other place? No thanks.
Some folks think the fence should be between California and Nevada...
“The people who dont believe in global warming are those that dont believe in the globe,” he said. “They think the world is flat.”
Actually those that believe in “golbal warming” are nothing more than Idiots bent on living on the efforts of others, to turn back the clock, and try to become our masters. They will be met with opposition at all turns.
If specific text about that can't be found in the Constitution, it is not up to the federal government to do it. Arnie, you are free to continue your inherited, long tradition of screwing up Kalifornistan. And let's keep it that way.
Get out while there is still time!
The Governator is correct. Every township could have its own nuclear reactor by now.
The Californians need to shut up. Their own State is a horrendous mess which they need not export to the rest of the States.
Reuters: CEOs see green energy policies preserving U.S. jobsGOLETA, California (Reuters) - It's not often you hear executives from the biggest U.S. industries and a Republican governor clamoring for stronger regulations on climate change. But that's exactly what they want.
Without clear climate change policy, not only will manufacturing jobs be siphoned off to overseas rivals investing heavily in renewable energy sources, but U.S. companies won't have any clear direction on where best to invest their money in new capital projects to keep in line with regulations, top executives said.
They criticized the United States government sharply for failing to invest in new energy technologies.
They also blasted officials for neglecting to create aggressive energy efficiency standards and failing to extend tax subsidies for clean energy sources such as wind and solar -- measures they say would create jobs for Americans.
He seems sane at times, but on global warming he’s insane and wants to kill the economy.
I'd love to see him get out of CA permanently. But he learned his socialism in Austria and his Kennedy-style RINO politics from Maria Shriver Schwarzenneger. I recall being harassed on this forum for predicting exactly this mess when he was running for Gov.
Federal Government Asleep at the Wheel...Way to go, George W. Bush! Pleasant dreams...
A lot of us were harassed for it. The viciousness was crazy.
Hey Governor, instead of yapping about the “Global Wrming” hoax, how about doing something about California’s $16B budget deficit, taxpayers and businesses fleeing the state in droves, etc.?
