The federal government is cracking down on immigrants who have been deported and then returned to the United States illegally.
The Los Angeles Times reviewed U.S. attorney's statistics and found prosecutors filed 539 such cases in fiscal year 2007. That's 35 percent of the total caseload compared to 207 in 2006 - 17 percent of all cases.
Federal authorities say they are mainly targeting gang members, drug dealers and career criminals who have re-entered the country after being deported. But critics say people who commit minor crimes have been caught up in the recent crackdown.
The newspaper reports immigration officials in Los Angeles are largely responsible for the recent spike in prosecutions. In 2006, they created a nine-person team to check inmate populations for potential prosecution.
I like targeting with the shotgun approach, what ever illegal you hit deport.
539 is still far too low a number...
Lost Angeles is now a Mexican territory.
Though the news media has tried to downplay it illegal immigration is considered a national crisis by a majority of Americans. Illegal immigration is also a big component of other issues like national security, the economy, education, entitlements, law and order, the war on drugs, etc.
I’d like it if we’d also devote similar resources to prosecuting businesses that hire illegals. Drying up the jobs would do a lot to diminish the number of illegals who enter. With a smaller population to hide in and for authorities to deal with, the criminals who are left would be much easier targets.
