In response to my column Racist Slander From The New Yorker, "Condiment" author Hendrik Hertzberg wrote,
Dear Mr. Parks:No, Mr. Hertzberg. I read your piece. I do understand when one writes as much as we do, sometimes remembering what you wrote can be a challenge.Evidently you neglected to read all the way through my piece. To save you the trouble of going back to it, here is how it ends:
"Her [Rice's] ascension, though nowhere near as momentous a breakthrough as the election of Obama or Clinton, would be a breakthrough all the same. In this connection, a kind word for George W. Bush may be in order. By appointing first Colin Powell and then Rice to the most senior job in the Cabinet, a job of global scope, Bush changed the way millions of white Americans think about black public officials. This may turn out to the most positive legacy of his benighted Presidency."
Also, it's "Democratic president," not "Democrat president."
Finally, I feel constrained to ask: Where is the "racist slander" in my piece? Or was that headline put on your post by an overeager editor?
Sincerely, Hendrik Hertzberg

In a world where evidence and logic rule, that would leave a mark. But it won’t be noticed in Hertzberg’s world..I wonder what color the sky is over there?
The whole column is well worth reading. Its a keeper.
Rice has been one of the more admired people among Republicans from the beginning, simply because of her dignity and intellect. If she has lost some of her shine since moving over to State, it is because she has caught the State disease of tending to side with the Pals against Israel, a disease she shares, evidently, with Olmert.
It is that, her perceived weakness on Israel, that would make her a hard sell to conservatives.
It is instructive to note that those conservatives who go after her do so because she looks too much like a State Department geek, whereas Dems go after her for the thought-crime of not joining the right party.
Democrats are and continue to be the party of race obsession and race politics. They don’t know any other way. When a Dem finally learns to judge someone on their character alone, and their policies alone, and listen to what they say without factoring in race or ethnic filters, they are usually half a degree away from joining the GOP.
WOW! A CLASSIC! WOOOHOOO Bob!

Thanks Bob. You go into the trenches. You name names. GRRRRREAT work.
Condoleeza has my undying sympathy, having to deal with all those lib simpletons at “State” must be the ultimate bore.
Great stuff!
