City teachers to attend Marine boot camp in South Carolina

"They had a belief in what they were doing," she said. "It changed my mind about the whole thing. It was real."

While in the past she would never have encouraged a student to consider the military, now she has a more open mind.

More proof that the vast majority of anti-military sentiment as well as virtually all of Leftist dogma is based entirely upon ignorance.

Most misconceptions are based on ignorance. This sounds like a good program.

Indeed.  From the article:

Critics of military recruiting tactics are suspicious of the trips, which Caetano said cost the Marines about $75,000 per 80-teacher session.

When you consider the astronomical cost of some of the modern ordnance or equipment these days, it seems that the ability to expose a school teacher, who in turn has the opportunity to influence hundreds of children per year and perhaps many thousands during the course of his or her career, to the truth about such an important thing that they would likely get completely wrong otherwise for under $1,000. per person..... that seems like a heck of a bargain to me.

NY Daily News and NY Observer, IIRC, don't require excerpting. The posting of articles at this forum is programmed to recognize the source URL. You are forced to excerpt, if it is required, as long as you don't forget the URL. I was suspended once for forgetting to include a WaPo URL. FReepmail me if you want on or off my New York ping list.

I only have two criticisms of the program:

A)It’s limited to the Marines.
B)It’s limited to a specific urban area.

Of course, there is no way to measure the success of the program, so I don’t see it as taking off in any significant way. That would be a shame.

my hubby attended this a few years ago.
Loved it.
He especially loved how the liberals he was traveling with shrunk at the sight of a gun.

That’s interesting, thank you....Ive been blocked from posting Daily News articles in the past when I included the whole thing.

I’ll try posting the whole article next time and see if the system still blocks me.

Thank you for pinging your list :-)

Agreed on all counts.  Hopefully other TRULY 'progressive' school districts in other parts of the country will indicate an interest in a similar program in their area, but I won't be holding my breath.

The thing to do would be to combine it with history/current affairs or science/technology. Just off the top of my head, you understand.

You mean in order to gain their Continuing Education credits in those disciplines ? Sounds splendid, although I’m guessing that the worst offenders in most schools in terms of ignorance about the military are going to be in the English departments and so that might leave them out of it.

Of course, mandatory military service for anyone aspiring to be a teacher would take care of that little issue pretty well.... :-)

I read somewhere here on FR that up through the 1960s, NYC public schools had rifle ranges and classes.

Anyone who can verify and provide some info?

I wonder what the campus shooter risk was back then.

Some on the part of the Leftists, but mostly deliberately CREATED by the Leftists.

Whoever came up with this program needs a promotion. Teachers and counselors are by-and-large left of center, so the more they can get into this the better.

No, no credits. Some of the smartest historians I’ve met have been at war colleges and other such places.

It’s true. Many of the schools did have ranges. The guns used were WWII vintage 22s, single shot, bolt action.

Also, many of the schools still have apartments in the basement where the janitor lived — those coal burners needed to be stoked 24/7.

Quite a telling observation, isn't it?  Military service sharpens the intellect as well as the body, something that the ubiquitous commie History 'teachers' in Government schools and Universities will never admit.
