It's been considered a sin since Onan (Genesis) and that was the view of the original Protestant reformeres as well: Luther, Calcin, etc. There's not one Christian denomination that approved of contraception until the Anglican's OK'ed it at their Lambeth Conference in 1930.

I was not surprised by the fact that it is sinful...I was shocked that it was put on the same level as abortion and causing poverty etc etc.
I am Catholic myself, and I know how the Catholic Church feels about contraception. That is no secret.
