On Monday, March 3rd, I was proud to join New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and six other state legislators from around the country to announce a new coalition, State Legislators Against Illegal Guns (SLAIG), at a press conference in Jacksonville, Florida. The six founding members of the new group pledged to enlist their colleagues in state legislatures across the country in an effort to identify common sense policies that will help to keep guns out of the hands of criminals.
The lawmakers who joined me for the announcement represent suburban, rural and urban districts from around the country, and are united by a commitment to public safety that extends beyond political and regional boundaries. We share an understanding that if we move beyond the usual polarizing rhetoric about guns, there are many effective and common sense strategies we can implement at the state level, or with our city and federal partners, to stop criminals from obtaining illegal guns.
Some of our goals include:
o Targeting and holding accountable irresponsible gun dealers who break state and federal laws, including those who sell guns to straw purchasers. Promoting measures that responsible gun retailers can adopt to minimize the risk of guns ending up in the hands of criminals.
o Opposing all federal efforts to restrict cities, counties, and states right to access, use, and share trace data that is so essential to effective enforcement, or to interfere with the ability of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to combat illegal gun trafficking.
o Supporting common-sense legislation that keeps guns out of the hands of criminals, including terrorists. Ensuring that all gun sales involve background checks that access all the available information about persons prohibited under state and federal law from buying guns, such as those with mental illness.
o Working to develop and use technologies that aid in the detection and apprehension of illegal gun criminals and traffickers, including efforts to share regional information.
o Pursuing local, state, and federal legislation that targets illegal guns; coordinate criminal, administrative, and civil enforcement, and share information and best practices.
o Punishing to the maximum extent of the law criminals who possess, use, and traffic in illegal guns.
I look forward to working with Mayor Bloomberg and legislators from New York and throughout the United States to advance an agenda that will remove illegal guns from our streets and will improve the public safety in our community.
I’m against illegal guns too, so legalize more guns!
No gun is illegal. Or something.
When they commit really bad crimes (murder rape etc....) Give them the electric chair. Have a real death penalty that really puts people to death instead of sitting on death row for 30 years. I can't remember the last time that New York actually used the death penalty.
MOLON LABE, Bloomie you sumb!tch!!!!
I’m against criminals in politics, but we’re severely overstocked in that department.
The only gun that is legal, to these dolts, is the one that is possessed by the police.
However the main problems seems to be the politicians who wants those Illegals in the country to begin with, notwithstanding the protests from the citizens who are suffering from the presence of these ILLEGALS: i.e. Higher crime, burden on education, welfare, police, lower wages, etc, etc.
Bloomberg should get his head outta his @$$ in his jihad against guns and focus his energy on fighting ILLEGALS who are a major National Security threat against this country.
I get it..Gun bad..bad gun..gun..go to your room..you bad..bad..there..have I solved the problem???
I’m for honesty in advertising. Let’s just call them SLAG. State Lawmakers Against Guns. Besides, slag is the scum left over from smelting valuable metals...
Legalize All Guns!!!
Ditto!
Me too. Every time my wife complains when I bring home a new one, I just tell her that I’m doing my part to keep guns off the street. She doesn’t have any idea how successful I’ve been.
Take out the I and you have SLAG.
