I heard this on Fox this morning too, and it sounded plausible to me, although significantly more left wing than the usual Deadly Sins.

If it is something that somebody in Rome made up and SAID was deadly sin, that is another story. But that is not the way it was presented.

"If it is something that somebody in Rome made up and SAID was deadly sin, that is another story. But that is not the way it was presented."

I read the article and I thought it was awesome. Bishop Girotti essentially reinforced that things such as contraception and abortion, (which stifle God's will), and murder, theft, covetessnous, accessive accumulation of wealth, (lust), etc. are grave sins.

Most of the 'new sins' spoken of by Bishop Girotti were clearly identified; they were drug dealing, (which willfully, for one's personal gain, destroys the body, spirituality and souls of the addicted). Also, "morally debatable scientific experiments, or allowing genetic manipulations which alter DNA or compromise embryos". These of course are sins of idolatry, (and possibly murder), where 'science' seeks to manipulate God's own creation and play the role of God, and sometimes even murder, (destruction of viable embryos). Without being specific he also condemned social injustice, which I see as Communism, (Castro, hugo Chavez), perpetual tribal warfare against weaker tribes, governments taking food from the populace to feed their military, and there is too much vice and corruption in Western governments too. Again, good for Bishop Girotti and the Vatican.

Bishop Girotti also warned of "the unstoppable process of globalization". Cudos to him for condeming globalization, which is gradually destroying the autonomy of man, and which actively seeks an illicit central authority over all of mankind.

Now, the Fox article headliner cleverly declares: "Recycle or Repent", but Bishop Gilotti never said a single thing about recycling. The great majority of what the Bishop said was of awesome importance for Catholics, and for all Christians. There is but one single "new" sin spoken of by the Bishop that raised a question in this sadly secular article, that being the destruction of the environment. Note that the Bishop did not go into detail with this particular 'new' sin, (or possibly the article left it out), hence many people will fill in the blanks and think the Vatican calls sinners those who toss a cigarette butt out of their car window. This confusion, I believe, is what this article seeks to create. Confusion and chaos are from the Devil. Still, I personally believe that the willfull destruction of the environment, such as when Saddam Hussein purposely set fire to numerous oil wells, or when a Chinese food processing plant knowingly uses food products that were spoiled by polluted, deadly chemicals, or knowingly manufactures toys with deadly chemicals, (lead), in them, or a company that willfully dumps deadly chemicals into rivers or water bodies to save money from doing it properly, or when nuclear waste is improperly disposed of, etc, etc, these are indeed grave sins against our neighbors, (which violates "love they neighbor as theyself", and also violates God's law that man shall have dominion over the earth, and "replenish it", (Genesis 1).

Lastly, I would remind the readers that the Bishop, not the Pope, spoke these words. The article cleverly uses the Popes words here, and the Bishop's words there, and festoons the sentences in a confusing way to obscure who is saying what. If you re-read the article, slowly, you will see that the Pope said nothing about "new sins", it was from a Vatican official, a Bishop, speaking to priests at a seminar, and who was apparently stating his personal views.
