Socialism, Marxism and collectivism has worked everywhere it has ever been tried. The Spanish voters have been paying attention and they know.

>>a fresh mandate to pursue his agenda of sweeping social, cultural and political liberalization.

What’s “liberal” about state socialism? Oh, I forgot, the Left Orwellianly redefined “liberal” some years back.

Socialism always sounds great. “You can have as much healthcare, pension benefits and wages as you want.”

If you try to explain it to people (such as how to pay for it, WHY we shouldn’t be giving everything away, etc), you are called a conservative a$$hole. Many people will take something for nothing even if they have to give up their freedom (such as keeping the money they work for).

Socialism appeals to the stupid, lazy, jealous and guilty.

Too bad. The Spaniards seem to have lost their collective stones. I frankly don’t see what is so attractive about sacrificing the real greatness of one’s country on this altar.

“Free stuff! I’ll give you free stuff!” —the cry of the socialist politician.

It works. It’s working here. Hillary Clinton had an actual television commercial featuring a Winter Festival Tree with all sorts of wrapped goodies that she would give to the American people. That she’s being beaten by someone even more openly Marxist is disquieting, to say the least.

Yeah, that’s why some friends on mine who moved back to Spain last year still can’t find a job. The gov’t is paying them to stay home, the economy is in a shambles, the Islamic threat grows daily, and the band plays on, just like on the Titanic.

“Collectivism is a doctrine of war, intolerance, and persecution. If any of the collectivist creeds should succeed in its endeavors, all people but the great dictator would be deprived of their essential human quality. They would become mere soulless pawns in the hands of a monster.”

Ludwig Von Mises

Imagine that! all this time I've been working to fulfill my own aspirations.

the granting of more autonomy to Spain’s rebellious regions

He's either been bought off or threatened.

Why would a leader want chunks of his country to secede?

I feel like I'm living in an Ayn Rand novel.

Mr. Zapatero said he would work to fulfill the aspirations of
women and young people and provide more support
for the elderly.

This sounds familiar, and I see no difference from the usual dogma of the Socialist party.

Big government is on the rise everywhere, or so it seems right now. We wonderful humans can solve all our own problems this way and everything will be just fabulous from now on. No war. No hunger. No disease. No death. No want for anything. Isn't it marvelous?

Europe is socialist because most Europeans are now secular humanists.

Our government schools are factories for secular humanist thinking. It is inevitable that America will be a socialist nation very soon if we do not address this problem.

It’s hardly a victory for the Socialists. It’s just like the “mandate” the Democrats got in 2006, they barely held onto their lead. It’s not a victory for Conservatism, but it seems they have a strong enough opposition to prevent the Socialists from having a field day.

I'm thinking, the last time Spain was important was in the 1800’s, when we kicked their asses out of the USA.

The Commies over at the NY Times are really wetting their knickers over this one:

NY Times:  Zapatero: Spain’s Bold Liberal

Tall, thin and well-dressed, Mr. Zapatero has a calm, friendly manner and deep, sonorous voice that offset his image as wide-eyed and awkward.

He was the accidental prime minister, an unproven Socialist contender swept into power by a surge of public rage about the way Spain’s conservative government handled the terrorist bombings of March 11, 2004.

But far from governing with temerity, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, 47, seized the narrow mandate he won at the polls four years ago to propel a country once gripped by religious conservatism into the liberal vanguard of Europe.

43.7% of the vote? Parliamentary democracy is a joke, it means that 56% voted against and this ass still got in. But it’s ok, Hitler became chancellor of Germany with a mere 38%.
