McCain steps into debate over cause of autism
International Herald Tribune ^ | Mar. 4, 2008 | Benedict Carey

"It's indisputable that autism is on the rise among children," Senator John McCain said while campaigning recently in Texas. "The question is what's causing it. And we go back and forth and there's strong evidence that indicates that it's got to do with a preservative in vaccines."

With that comment, McCain marked his entry into one of the most politicized scientific issues in a generation.

McCain is correct that autism diagnoses have increased in recent decades; indeed, no one disputes that. He is on much shakier ground when talking about the preservative as a cause.

While some parents' groups and lawmakers assert that the preservative, called thimerosal, has caused an epidemic of new autism cases, most mainstream researchers strongly disagree.

Several large-scale studies have found no evidence of a link between thimerosal and autism, and medical groups including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Institute of Medicine and the American Academy of Pediatrics have publicly stated as much. In January, the state of California reported an increase in autism cases, despite the removal of thimerosal from most vaccines.

>>>McCain needs to stay away from things he’s not well informed about in or he will get savaged.<<<

He's on the ManCausedGlobalWarming bandwagon and doesn't know squat.

My only hope is he's joind the GW wacko's cause there's more of them voting than us "deniers". Lord help us if he really believes man can do anything about GW. He could throw the world economy into a deepfreeze.

Look at sunspot activity for your answer - CO2 is not a cause of GW, its the result!

With the advance of medicines and treatments since the 1960’s if one were to get the measles or some of these other things that we are immunized for, could they be treated effectively most of the time or still possibly a death sentence if contracted? Maybe the vaccines could be reduced if medicine can be used effectively. I don’t know.

Some yes, some no. Here is what I have seen in my life that tells me that vaccination is a good idea:

Some of the diseases we vaccinate for are not often deadly, but they are often enough that there is still the need. Our previous pediatrician told me that he had seen deaths from chicken pox, Whooping Cough, and Measles.

A pregnant woman who contracts German Measles, which is very mild otherwise and may go unnoticed, can end up having a blind baby, a deaf baby or a baby with heart problems. I would hate for my child to be the one to infect her because I chose not to vaccinate against this otherwise mild illness.

I actually saw a case of whooping cough that could have been fatal. I don't know what happened in the end, but she was gray when they brought her into the hospital and the nurses and doctors descended on her as they brought her in the door.

I have a relative who had polio as a child and to this day has issues with "post polio syndrome", problems that can only be treated somewhat today.

My current pediatrician will not treat children whose parents don't believe in vaccination. She says her opinion is that it is a necessity. If parents override her medical opinion completely, they can do so elsewhere. If you have a need to delay them, fine, but if you flat out refuse them, no-go.

I trust my doctors judgment enough to vaccinate my child. If I didn't, I'd be a fool to ever trust her judgment on anything.

No amount of studies or anything else will make a dent in the diamoomd hard ignorance of thse who buy some book from a quack and think it is Holy Writ.
Thimerosal in a vaccine doesn’t cause autism but since something must it will continue to be blamed.

Dodging vaccinations is all just a game, until you’ve got a houseful of kids with the Whooping Cough!

well most scientists would think that makes you the quack for not accepting mainstream science on global warming... especially if you’re going to bring up sun spots.

I don’t think most global warming is manmade but it is occurring and is a result of CO2 and other greenhouse gases.

BTW, thimerosal = merthiolate. Same thing by a different name. The Europeans took it out of their usual childhood vaccines several years before we did. They continue to see the same amount of “autism” as we do. Mercury isn’t the cause, but maybe some good will come from the deluded masses who think it is. Let’s start inventing hints that it isn’t the non-existent mercury in the vaccines, but instead the increasing use of mercury in light bulbs that is the culprit... Maybe we could keep our mercury free bulbs instead of buying Gore’s brand.

Wow did McCain ever stir up Dr. Dean Edell today on his radio show. The Dr. said McCain was probably incapable of making any important decisions based on his remarks about the vaccine controversy.

That's what prompted me to post this article. I heard the good little liberal doctor trash McCain.

When he talked about how McCain can't reason I agreed with him but he never said what the witch or the voodoo man would say about this.

You’re not supposed to talk about her habit of stealing drugs from charity boxes. It gets the McCain supporters very upset. Why, I don’t know. It’s the truth.

Also you can’t mention how McCain dumped his first wife after she became disabled and how he married the addict less than a month later. Of course her daddy had lots of money so it’s supposed to be okay.

I get sick to my stomach thinking of any of the candidates or their spouses in our White House. Yes, OUR White House.

How long ago? ;') But anyway, this is a tempest in a lead-lined aluminum teapot filled with mercury-contaminated water.
