When attempting to defuse an embarrassing situation, the best strategies rely on early and full disclosure in the hope that the eventual revelations prove anti-climactic. Barack Obama apparently hasnt learned this yet, but the Tony Rezko trial may wind up schooling Obama on the principle. The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Rezko and his associates provided three times as much money for Obama than the presidential candidate has admitted:
During his 12 years in politics, Sen. Barack Obama has received nearly three times more campaign cash from indicted businessman Tony Rezko and his associates than he has publicly acknowledged, the Chicago Sun-Times has found.
Obama has collected at least $168,308 from Rezko and his circle. Obama also has taken in an unknown amount of money from people who attended fund-raising events hosted by Rezko since the mid-1990s.
But seven months ago, Obama told the Sun-Times his best estimate was that Rezko raised between $50,000 and $60,000″ during Obamas political career.
Obama, who wants to be the nations next president, has been purging some of those donations giving charities more than $30,000 he got from Rezko and three of his business partners referenced in Rezkos federal indictments. All three attended a lavish fund-raiser Rezko hosted for Obama four years ago.
Obama, however, has kept $6,850 from others who also are referenced in Rezkos indictments. Obama also has hung on to contributions from doctors whom Rezko helped appoint to a state-government panel involved in some of Rezkos alleged fraud schemes.
The connections to Obama have received more attention, thanks to the local Chicago media rather than their national counterparts. One of Rezkos associates turns out to be Ali D. Ata, who worked in Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevichs administration. Ata now faces fraud charges for writing a letter on state letterhead on behalf of Rezko that lied well enough to get millions of dollars in loans. Rezko brought Ata into Obamas camp as a contributor.
There is also Joseph Aramanda. He faces no charges in the Rezko scandals, but Aramanda allegedly played a role in a scheme Rezko used to exploit the Illinois state teachers fund. Aramanda also had a son who worked on Obamas staff, and he also contributed to Obamas campaign.
All of this and more centers on the Rezko-Obama relationship. Obama has tried to minimize his connections to Rezko, understandably, as Rezko sinks deeper into his federal trial. The Sun-Times and other Chicago newspapers keep finding more and more connections and showing that Rezko was more than just a contributor to an election campaign. Obama and Rezko have significant ties, and at the very least it calls into question how Obama could have remained ignorant of his friends corruption while at least indirectly benefiting from it.
He might convince people he had no knowledge of it. However, as more connections come to the light, the best he can argue is that he is so naive and unschooled that he couldnt see corruption where it obviously exists. If so, how can he argue that hes sophisticated enough to run the nation?
UPDATE: This story comes from June 2007. I didnt notice that when I first read the story. Its interesting, though, that no one has thought to follow this up since then, at least not in the national media. I think this shows why the Chicago media displayed such frustration in last weeks press conference in Texas in that their national colleagues havent exactly lit up the wires in picking up on their work.
A mere hiccup to the MSM.
Just a little tree falling in a big forest as far as the MSM is concerned.
It doesn’t matter. I hope they ignore it, because it is a ticking time bomb. Obama may be supported by the 20-something crowd, but I think Independents do not trust him.
From the audacity of hope to soap on a rope.
You don’t think Obama will get the nomination?
a slickster?
Well, the “Chicago S-T” is the MSM.
You just wait until all the Rezko stuff comes out about B. Hussein Obama. This is just going to get more interesting.
I HOPE NOT! But I don’t like Hillary either, and I can’t get excited about McCain!
I sorta agree, but when will we see this as the lead on Katie Couric's CBS Evening News, for example? My guess is NEVER!
I think that his chance are probably good that he will, right now.
But I think he loses in November.
Dang, Hill is good at this stuff!
nah...DOPE on a rope!
nah...DOPE on a rope!

Jailed indicted businessman kills self
Everything was just great. I'd just left a meeting with him, wife says
My little recap of the McLaughlin Report discussing Rezko from the Sunday thread:...James Warren (Chig Trib) must clear the air...seems so put out by this whole affair. Makes the point that Obama should have known not to get involved with this guy. What about the role of the wives in this deal? John asks if Mee-shell should come forward? Monica says she should. Comparing this to Gerry Ferraro, Eleanor is screeching that there is no evidence of wrongdoing here but Obama’s not taking the punch well. What if Obama has to take the stand and pleads the 5th? Devastating, says Monica, but doesn’t think it will go this far. Eleanor is screeching(annoying shriek) McCarthyesque!!! John insists that the wives executed the whole deal and that Obama should be asked if he has told the truth...he has not leveled with the American people. John keeps suggesting Obama do a Gerry Ferraro news conference and clear the air. The Trib guys insists there is nothing illegal going on here. Pat says it’s suicidal for Barry to hold a presser. Sorry, folks, the shouting is rampant; I’m having trouble reporting correctly.
Now that we know what Rezko has done for Obama. all that remains to be seen is what Obama will do for Rezko! :)
I wonder how much Rezko had to pay for his photograph taken with the Clinton “power couple from Arkansas”.
