They always jump at the chance to lecture us about “thenthorthip” and how parents should never have any say whatsoever in their children’s schools’ choices of required reading.

Actually the Deerfield story was about a student who wanted to read that play and teacher of that class getting permission to read and discuss this AIDS related subject/award winning literary work (to some, so becomes controversial) in class and they went the route of permission to do so as controversial to some. Depends on how you read the play-it is not about voyeurism as someone has projected XXX Rate video/bookstore photo above. Deerfield told parents of this one English class before the play was read by that student- Angels in America.

There is more to Angels in America than being just a "paperback romance type novel"(-have you seen what women writers say in these things?). It will remain a controversy, just like Catcher In The Rye..even though Angels in America is not considered as shocking at this timeframe in Western society, but it still brings out the same bookburners.
