I remember a cover of National Review which had pictures of the leading American conservative intellectuals of the day (late 70s). About one third were Jewish.

Actually he was only 82, not 83.

Buckley had patrician mannerisms but in an earlier period his family would not have been called "patrician" but rather nouveau riche--his father struck it rich in the oil business.

By remaking the conservative movement in his own image, in which the emphasis was on anti-communism and a libertarian skepticism of government power, he ensured that it, and the Republican Party, which it came to dominate, would be a place where Jew-haters were unwelcome.

Seems as if the Democrats are still waiting for an equivalent of Buckley to purge their ranks of antisemites. And considering their current candidates for the presidential nomination, they'll be waiting for a long time to come.

BTW, the "conservative movement" has only dominated the GOP intermittently, and certainly is not doing so in this election cycle.
