The Time Is Now
Human Events ^ | 3/9/08 | D. R. Tucker

The outcome of the 2008 election will let us know whether the old-school concepts of duty, honor, bravery, sacrifice, integrity and honor still mean anything in today’s society. In order words, if John McCain loses, we’ll know that slick marketing and soft words have become more important than character and substance.

It’s a shame that American political decisions are so subjective and emotional—because by any objective, logical standard, McCain is far more qualified to be President than either Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton. McCain is superior to Obama and Clinton in terms of experience and intellect; he will be a Commander-in-Chief who commands immediate respect, something that is difficult to the point of impossibility to say about either Democrat.

McCain is an imperfect man—but do we demand perfection from Presidents, or just competence? Conservatives have long been skeptical of McCain’s “maverick” political nature. Yet one must ask: what is preferable, a “maverick” who will occasionally disagree with conservatives, or a hard-left ideologue whose dogmatic crusades will send the country to the point of peril?

For all the talk of the role gender has played in this election, the truth is that neither Obama nor Clinton are “man enough” to be President. Clinton prattles on about her thirty-five years of experience, but what has she really done all these years? Clinton has been a cheerleader for ultraliberal extremists, a Lady MacBeth-style defender of her husband, an ineffective Senator, and a political figure of unprecedented divisiveness. Some track record.

Is it just me or do McAmnesty’s actions with respect to his party and conservatives in general during the last 7 years prove the first paragraph a complete piece of sophistry?

Character and substance would not be two words I would use for Mccain. Traitor and Liberal, yes.

McPain is the worst RINO to be nominated in the last 50 years.

All of this bashing of McCain is just plain tedious. Few of us here on FR are happy with the choice but let’s move on from the simple-minded venting that he’s a RINO. Bring something new to the discussion.

Some important things were left out of this article. Let’s start with the fact that all three are crooks.

All right, he’s a traitorous globalist, too.

And a bank robber.

The author lost me with the second sentence!

You are right. We know that he is dishonest, disloyal, deceitful and doesn't support conservative positions.

The question for a true conservative is which poison to take. Hillary's poison would be quick, horribly painful and absolutely lethal, but there would be hope of rising from the ashes like a Phoenix. Hussein's poison would be just as lethal , probably less painful, and very protracted, taking years to show the symptoms.

The McCain poison would taste good at first. Then we would watch our limbs start withering away and blame ourselves not knowing what was happening. Our death would be a peaceful, almost welcome event.

I for one, am not going to knowingly take one of the above poisons. I was a conservative prior to Reagan when we were a tiny minority and I can do it again. I am not going to abandon my principles just to get along. Politics is the Art of Compromise and I am just not a politician.

I like the way you think :-) I’m leaning towards a write-in myself. It would be nice if our conservative base could rally around a conservative write-in candidate. But who? Fred Thompson was too limp wristed. Though I agree with a lot of what Ron Paul says, I can’t bear to hear him say it. Huckabee already did the nation a service by showing how very little conservatives care for McCain; I would not want to bring him back into the equation now. So ... who? We need numbers to make an effective statement, and we won’t gain numbers without a solid rallying point.

Written by a GOOD Republican, but not much of a conservative. Who the heck is D.R. Tucker? Never heard of him and cannot google him. Must be someone on McAmnesty’s campaign team. HUMAN EVENTS is not what it once was IMO.

“Yet one must ask: what is preferable, a “maverick” who will occasionally disagree with conservatives...”

Don’t worry, it’s only on the important issues.
