ScienceDaily (Mar. 8, 2008) Astronomers from The University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario, have captured rare video of a meteor falling to Earth.
Astronomy Department at Western has a network of all-sky cameras in Southern Ontario that scan the sky monitoring for meteors. Associate Professor Peter Brown, who specializes in the study of meteors and meteorites, says that Wednesday evening (March 5) at 10:59 p.m. EST these cameras captured video of a large fireball and the department has also received a number of calls and emails from people who actually saw the light.

Yep. I love looking at the old car ads and the ads for the latest "wood fired" kitchen stoves that will "end the drudgery of cooking", and such. It's also pretty easy to see from the ads why they called it the "roaring twenties"....
I also have virtually every copy of National Geographic from the late 50's and 60's that covered the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs.

The UWO project is pretty interesting- I belong to a club that provides a site for one of their tracking cameras. They have a network of all-sky cameras and they use software to compare the images and track the progress of meteors. A side benefit for us is that they pay for a broadband connection at our observatory property.
A live feed from our all-sky camera is at http://aquarid.physics.uwo.ca/~sentinel/05.html
I had a great aunt that had a mess of Nat. Georaphics from the late 50’s and early 60’s at her lake cabin. When I was a kid, I used to love to sit and read those things when it was rainy or while we were waiting to go swimming (”Not for a half-hour after you eat!”).
She had an issue that highlighted the USS Nautilus’ first trek under the Arctic ice, being the 1st submarine to go under the North Pole.
She had an issue that highlighted the maiden voyage of the USS Savannah, what was then the world’s first nuclear-powered frieghter.
I also remember all the ads for cruises, not just for exotic vacations, but also for regular runs across the North Atlantic.
Back then, we still lived in a ‘age of wonder’.
(BTW...she let me have a bunch of those old magazines, but alas...over the years they’ve been lost to the mists of time.)
Was the planet created for man?
I would imagine that if you believe in God, you would assume that it was?
It could become quite philosophical. Unfortunately most people today see man as the evil destroyer of earth, rather than its caretaker, or having dominion over all.
But as I said before, looking at the end of the earth without man, would kinda make gardening pointless. ; )
Whoever finds a meteorite can plan their retirement. They are far more valuable per pound than Rhodium.

I guess there’s a man who demands proof— what, 95?

Almost committed a temporal post anomaly before I caught myself.
I think I spent most of my time reading the issues that had stories about native African tribes...
