One of my memories of Great Lakes was that I would always volunteer to take the hand-held brooms and sweep under the racks of my own rack and the neighboring racks. It was one of my favorite parts of the day there, because for five minutes, nobody was bothering me about anything. It was truly amazing that they could push you so hard that sweeping dust from under a bed was pleasant in comparison.

Nevertheless, I would recommend boot camp to anyone. It’s good to be pushed outside of one’s comfort zone from time to time.

Anyway, getting a break to listen to Vice President Cheney would have been great.

I was “lucky” enough to do my basic at Great Lakes in the Winter.. - When Dad signed up for the Korean conflict the Navy recruiter told him not to pack too much he was going to San Diego...when he got off of the plane in Chicago in Jan he had a pretty good idea he was not in San Diego. On the other side of that coin, my Grandfathers bunk mate there was a Kellogg and he got to go see the Detroit Tigers and Ty Cobb on leave once with the Kellogg family.

I did basic at Great Mistakes over the summer. I had to stay over the winter for A school.

One day in the winter, they announced that the wind chill factor was 59 degrees below zero. All I could think was that’s much colder than yesterday that was only 40 below zero.
