I was “lucky” enough to do my basic at Great Lakes in the Winter..WAAAAAAAAAY back in ‘71..what a freakin garden spot at that time of the year..(do I need a /s tag??)
hehehehe,.. so Ive heard,.. my Dad went through Great Lakes in winter of ‘42.
One of my memories of Great Lakes was that I would always volunteer to take the hand-held brooms and sweep under the racks of my own rack and the neighboring racks. It was one of my favorite parts of the day there, because for five minutes, nobody was bothering me about anything. It was truly amazing that they could push you so hard that sweeping dust from under a bed was pleasant in comparison.
Nevertheless, I would recommend boot camp to anyone. It’s good to be pushed outside of one’s comfort zone from time to time.
Anyway, getting a break to listen to Vice President Cheney would have been great.
I remember those days also, with fond memories (Winter 69). /s ;-)
I did basic at Great Mistakes over the summer. I had to stay over the winter for A school.
One day in the winter, they announced that the wind chill factor was 59 degrees below zero. All I could think was that’s much colder than yesterday that was only 40 below zero.
