Lindberg Field, San Diego to Craig Field, Jacksonville Fla set new transcontinental record.
Mooney Acclaim,, worlds fastest single engine production plane.
I spent a few years flying a '62 Mooney M20J across the US. We never kept exact logs but for such an old plane it was fast. Not like the Acclaim fast but for a plane of its age and size it cruised pretty close to 200.
Very cool.
FR would be such an empty place if all FReepers did this. Way to go.
Impressive is right.
Mooney's are slippery aircraft and fly, pariticularly in the approach environment, faster than many pilots can think.
It makes them a useful aircraft for people transitioning to jets because they are forced to get well ahead of the aircraft.
There are also the perfect aircraft for people with no shoulders.
;->
Our next door neighbor in MN owned a Mooney. He worked for NWA and was 747 qualified but always said the little airplane was a sports car...
A whole lot faster than my trusty old Cherokee. Very cool.
Accounting for takeoff and landing time, which is VERY slow for this aircraft, that works out to barely 10 minutes per TIMEZONE. That's just way cool.
I’m told by someone who was there when that Blackbird took off for its final flight that the record was supposed to have been faster still, but they had some mechanical problem, with the fuel pump IIRC, that slowed them down by a few minutes.
