Q&A: Barack Obama
"I believe in the redemptive death and resurrection of Jesus Christ."
Interview by Sarah Pulliam and Ted Olsen | posted 1/23/2008 02:18PM

Barack Obama wants to set the record straight. He is not a Muslim, as recent e-mails falsely claim.

The Democratic presidential candidate is fighting the e-mails that have been widely circulated. Obama has been continually speaking about the role of faith in politics since his Call to Renewal address in June 2006.

In the days before the South Carolina primary, he is driving efforts to speaking with media to emphasize his Christian beliefs. His campaign also sent out a recent mailer portraying the candidate with his head bowed in prayer and says that he will be guided by prayer when he is in office.

The senator from Illinois spoke with Sarah Pulliam and Ted Olsen today about his faith, abortion, and the evangelical vote.

Well, I am pretty doubtful Obama is a muslim, I will say that up front.

However, if he was a devout muslim, he would be allowed to lie to non-believers. He could even deny Allah to others and not have it count against him. It is the principle of “Al-Taqiyaa”.

Most Muslims are familiar with the principles of Islam that will justify lying in situations where they sense the need to do so (to protect themselves, to deceive an enemy, etc, to get an enemy to do something they wouldn’t if you were honest with them). Among these are:

War is deception.
The necessities justify the forbidden.
If faced by two evils, choose the lesser of the two.
These principles are derived from passages found in the Quran.

In the Quran, Allah, allegedly, says:
“ Allah will not call you to account for what is futile in your oaths, but He will call you to account for your deliberate oaths: for expiation, feed ten indigent persons, on a scale of the average for the food of your families; or clothe them; or give a slave his freedom. If that is beyond your means, fast for three days. That is the expiation for the oaths ye have sworn. But keep to your oaths. Thus doth Allah make clear to you His signs, that ye may be grateful.” Surah 5:89

“Allah will not call you to account for thoughtlessness (vain) in your oaths, but for the intention in your hearts; and He is Oft-forgiving, Most Forbearing.” Surah 2:225

“Any one who, after accepting faith in Allah, utters Unbelief, except under compulsion, his heart remaining firm in Faith - but such as open their breast to Unbelief, on them is Wrath from Allah, and theirs will be a dreadful Penalty.” Surah 16: 106

The noted Islamic commentator, Al-Tabary explained Surah 16:106 as a verse that had been revealed to Mohammed after he learned that Ammar Ibn Yasser was forced to deny his faith in Mohammed when kidnapped by the Banu Moghera tribe. Mohammed consoled Ammar by telling him, “If they turned, you turn.” (Meaning: if they again capture you, you are allowed to deny me again.)

So if he WAS a devout muslim he could be lying about it and it would be okay (as a muslim) to lie about it and still be considered a muslim in good standing. But again, I am doubtful that he is.

"But does Obama trust in Jesus for his salvation? That is the key."

Well....don't all saved Christians find a right to gay marriage in the Sermon on the Mount and believe the first chapter of Romans is an "obscure passage".

It is not unbelievable. Most if not all Roman Catholics, if they are honest, will tell you they are not sure they are going to heaven. They hope they are, but they are not certain of it. They will tell you it is presumptuous to assume that you will make it into heaven just because you believe in Jesus Christ and received Him as your personal Savior.

Protestants have the certain hope the Bible talks about.

Obama, being a member of a very liberal, borderline ‘Christian’ church, - I can understand why he isn’t sure. Their theology is extremely weak and is more about social politics rather than sound biblical teaching.

Beady eyes? How can you tell? Ever notice how he always has his eyes scrunched shut? Not that is really suspicious, if you ask me.

And if what you worship manifests itself in a way that Americans respect, you just might get yourself elected. Or at least, that's how it's supposed to work. But that's Conservatism 101. Were you absent that day?

I happen to agree ... but there are many FReepers (just look at this thread!) for whom Obama's religious statements make a great deal of difference ... and they're sure he's a Muslim, no matter what he says.

Who cares what this dope says? He’s trying to pit the writings of Paul against the Sermon on the Mount. He’s an Obamanation.

Islamics have a duty to lie to infidels.......

But only Obama is on duty 24/7! It's absolutely inspirational.

You can’t claim to be a Christian .. and not know where you will end your days.

Yes, we can that, too.
