Terri Schiavo's Family Launches New Radio Program on Protecting the Disabled

Tampa, FL (LifeNews.com) -- The foundation that Terri Schiavo's family created after her death is continuing its efforts to help the elderly and disabled obtain appropriate medical care. The foundation is launching a new radio program on a Tampa station that will be simulcast on the Internet and later expanded to other Florida stations.

The Terri Schindler Schiavo Foundation will start the new America's Lifeline program this weekend life from the Tampa studios of Talk Radio 860 WGUL, a Christian station.

Prominent radio health care advocate Cary Hall will co-sponsor the program along with Terri's brother Bobby Schinder and her sister Suzanne Vitadamo, the foundation's directors.

Hall is also the host of a successful radio show called The Health Insurance Advocate which broadcasts from two Midwest stations.

"America's Lifeline is something we've wanted to do for some time," Vitadamo told LifeNews.com on Thursday.

"With Cary Hall's health care expertise my family's experience trying to save Terri, and now running her foundation which works to save those like Terri, we'll be able to educate Americans and raise awareness about the euthanasia movement like never before," she added.

Vitadamo said the program would focus on controversial cases of people who have been subjected to potential euthanasia or denial of lifesaving medical treatment, such as Lauren Richardson in Delaware.

It will help people learn about the best advanced directives for treatment, learn about the dangers of assisted suicide, focus on state and federal laws and explain how hospice care can be helpful.

The program will also delve into the controversial futile care theory whereby hospitals and doctors are more routinely giving up on providing care for patients they consider "too far gone."

The America's Lifeline debut is set for 3 PM EST on Saturday, March 15, 2008 and it will also be streamed worldwide via the Internet at http://860wgul.townhall.com.

The program is poised to expand into other Florida radio markets including Orlando and Miami.

SALEM, Oregon, March 7, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A new study shows that doctors in Oregon, where physician assisted suicide (PAS) is legal, have prescribed lethal drugs to patients not actually suffering severe symptoms of their diseases. Patients have been prescribed the drugs upon experiencing only fear of future suffering and loss of dignity in the dying process, research reveals.

The study says, "Some Oregon clinicians have expressed surprise at the paucity of suffering at the time of the request among these patients".

Under Oregon's Death with Dignity Act, a terminally ill patient can request that his physician give him a prescription for a lethal dose of medication for the purpose of ending his life. Smith and other opponents of euthanasia and PAS have said that such laws, despite "safeguards" in regulations, are open to abuse and result in emotionally vulnerable patients being intimidated into making the request..........

The McCain Scrutiny...

The elites have granted us one wish out of three choices, or none of the above. This one is the least antagonistic of Terri's Legacy, and this is what he says:

In the brief news conference, Baptist Press asked McCain in light of his position on the sanctity of human life and his position on "judges who ... legislate from the bench," to clarify comments he made last year about Congress' intervention in the Terri Schiavo case. He told MSNBC, "It's an American tragedy." Baptist Press asked McCain to define what he meant by that.

"It's very sad when you see a situation such as this, it's very sad, I think just by looking at the situation it was a terrible situation and one that probably the state should had handled in retrospect and it was a very sad, sad situation and moved all of us who are -- and the plight of this situation moved every American," McCain said.

Democratic presidential candidate and U.S. Sen. Barack Obama said during a debate Feb. 26 that he regrets his 2005 vote allowing Congress to get involved in the case involving Terri Schiavo, the severely disabled woman from Florida who died of starvation and dehydration after nutrition and hydration were discontinued.

Obama made the comments during a Democratic debate with Hillary Clinton. Both were asked if there were any words or votes they'd "like to take back." Clinton cited her vote authorizing the war in Iraq; Obama, his Schiavo vote.

During a debate last year, Republican John McCain called the matter a "very, very difficult issue" and seemed himself to have some regrets.

"All of us were deeply moved by the pictures and the depiction of this terrible, tragic case," McCain said. "In retrospect, we should have taken some more time, looked at it more carefully, and probably [we] reacted too hastily."...................

I have no issues with the Shiavo family making a buck out of Terri’s life, but the problem is that if you don’t get on with your lives after a horrible death than you are never able to find peace. The Shiavo family will be mirerable for the rest of their lives unless they get a handle of themselves and stop making themselves professional victims.

Conventional wisdom also says that because he's a white man facing a black man or white woman (barring some extraordinary occurrence) at the top of the other ticket, McCain should have a female or minority (or both) on his ticket. Since McCain is a senator - and his wife runs the family business he married into - he should have a governor or someone with an administrative background. Since McCain is a moderate Republican, he should have a rock-solid conservative on the ticket. Since he represents a western state, McCain should tap an easterner, preferably from a swing state that the running mate could tip into McCain's corner.

Crist almighty?

Virtually every Republican governor has gotten at least a glance as a McCain running mate. One of the favorites is Florida's Charlie Crist. He first came to national attention as state attorney general "Chain Gang Charlie", advocating reinstatement of putting inmates to work outdoors shackled together. Florida is a key state to win - ask Al Gore - Crist is enormously popular, 52 years young, and very tight with McCain. During his 2006 gubernatorial run, Crist asked President George W Bush to stay away while welcoming McCain.

But Crist may be a bit too much of a maverick for the Republican knucklewalkers McCain hopes to energize. As attorney general, Crist bucked the far-right fringe by respecting Teri Schiavo's right to die in that ugly case. And, like McCain, he's one of these family values guys who's been divorced (a year after marrying his one and only wife ... hmmm). As governor, he's tangled with insurance companies, so there goes the free market vote. Both of those crowds would prefer Florida's ex-governor Jeb Bush, but with the Democrats trying to portray McCain as George Bush's third term, there's no way the name Bush would go on his ticket.

“Throughout my career, I have never returned to the same subject twice but I decided to make an exception with euthanasia as a result of the Terri Schiavo case,” says Zaritsky, speaking of the brain-damaged Florida woman at the center of a bitter right-to-die case between her husband and right-wing Christians as well as the Bush administration a few years ago. “Given the appalling reaction to the Schiavo case, I decided it was important to make another film,” he says.

Of course, two or perhaps even 200 documentaries will not be enough to change general attitudes and public policy on the subject. It’s the “R” word. “I am not a religious person,” the Oscar-winning Canadian director says. “I believe that organized religion prevents society and governments from making social advances that the public clearly wants. This is certainly the case with euthanasia, which shows public support for the right to die consistently at 60 percent or more in nearly all Western countries.”

Critics see a “slippery slope” whereby mercy killing degenerates into involuntary euthanasia, with elderly or sick people choosing to end their lives for fear of becoming a burden on their families. Nevertheless, laws permitting assisted suicide and/or voluntary euthanasia have also been passed over the past 15 years or so in Oregon in the USA, the Netherlands and Belgium...............

But Mikey Schiavo hasn't made much out of this deal anyway, except he exposed his intentions even more. It is ironic, you must be noticing, that this killer gets away with a state sponsored murder and still sees himself as a victim. I do wonder how his family is doing and wifey wondering when or if he pulls the plug on her one day.

Thankfully by great contrast the Schindlers are able to pull together what limited funds they can find to courageously help others facing the same fate their daughter Terri faced. And thankfully their perseverance shows some good result as we fight this pernicious euthanasia effort.

During debate last week on legislation pertaining to the abuse and neglect of children, which is intended to strengthen the Commonwealth's oversight of children under the charge of the State, an amendment written by Sen. Scott Brown, R-Wrentham, was passed unanimously. The amendment protects victims from those who have been charged with their abuse or neglect.

Brown filed “Haleigh’s Amendment” in response to the tragedy of the Haleigh Poutre case in Westfield in 2005. Haleigh had been hospitalized as the result of alleged abuse at the hands of her adoptive mother and stepfather who had burned and beaten her into a coma with a baseball bat. While on life support, Haleigh’s stepfather attempted to obtain guardianship of her even though he was suspected of the abuse.

This amendment would prohibit an individual from being appointed a guardian or medical proxy if they have been charged with assault and battery, or neglect of the incapacitated child. In this case, the amendment would have removed any ambiguity as soon as the stepfather was charged.

Currently, the court may appoint a guardian for a person who is unable to make or communicate informed decisions due to physical incapacity or illness.

Lathrup Village, MI (LifeNews.com) -- Acting on a tip form a local pro-life group, Michigan officials have found parts of unborn children, medical waste and patient records in a dumpster outside an abortion center. The potentially illegal dumping occurred outside the WomanCare abortion center on Southfield Road and the contents are believed to be from the abortion business.
