Terri Schiavo's Family Launches New Radio Program on Protecting the Disabled

Tampa, FL (LifeNews.com) -- The foundation that Terri Schiavo's family created after her death is continuing its efforts to help the elderly and disabled obtain appropriate medical care. The foundation is launching a new radio program on a Tampa station that will be simulcast on the Internet and later expanded to other Florida stations.

The Terri Schindler Schiavo Foundation will start the new America's Lifeline program this weekend life from the Tampa studios of Talk Radio 860 WGUL, a Christian station.

Prominent radio health care advocate Cary Hall will co-sponsor the program along with Terri's brother Bobby Schinder and her sister Suzanne Vitadamo, the foundation's directors.

Hall is also the host of a successful radio show called The Health Insurance Advocate which broadcasts from two Midwest stations.

"America's Lifeline is something we've wanted to do for some time," Vitadamo told LifeNews.com on Thursday.

"With Cary Hall's health care expertise my family's experience trying to save Terri, and now running her foundation which works to save those like Terri, we'll be able to educate Americans and raise awareness about the euthanasia movement like never before," she added.

Vitadamo said the program would focus on controversial cases of people who have been subjected to potential euthanasia or denial of lifesaving medical treatment, such as Lauren Richardson in Delaware.

It will help people learn about the best advanced directives for treatment, learn about the dangers of assisted suicide, focus on state and federal laws and explain how hospice care can be helpful.

The program will also delve into the controversial futile care theory whereby hospitals and doctors are more routinely giving up on providing care for patients they consider "too far gone."

The America's Lifeline debut is set for 3 PM EST on Saturday, March 15, 2008 and it will also be streamed worldwide via the Internet at http://860wgul.townhall.com.

The program is poised to expand into other Florida radio markets including Orlando and Miami.

Today is known as Holy Saturday to Christians, Catholics especially. It does not equate on the calendar with the Holy Saturday of three years ago, but today is a reminder of the sometimes incredible parallels between the Easter season and the agony of Terri three years ago.

One little story comes to mind.

That Holy Saturday held an empty and hollow ambience. Earlier in the morning a friend and I found the large bare cross which had been posted in prominence near the entrance to the hospice, the place most often shown in the news. Those who brought it had left it there on the ground. Too heavy to prop up easily, they dug a discrete post hole for it. It was early morning and few were up and around and the mood was especially somber.

As we searched for the post hole, the cops approached us, scolded us and warned us, no cross could be put there. The hole had been filled. They said the only way we could display the cross would be like any other sign, held in place by hand.

So we did. As others saw that big bare cross propped up, they came to help. Soon people were vying for turns to keep the cross propped up and that is how it stayed that Holy Saturday.

Haleigh Poutre update...

Haleigh is doing better and will soon be confronting her attacker and perhaps well deserved justice may be meted out. The spotlight that shown on Haleigh's plight as DSS tried to end her life has shown good results, one of them setting DSS on the front burner. Now the heat is turning up on DSS.

It is no longer open to debate: the state Department of Social Services is a dysfunctional agency whose collective actions and systemic negligence are intolerable and border on criminal.

The case involving the 7-year-old Middleboro boy who was beaten and burned by someone is just the latest fiasco that has DSS officials admitting they made errors.

One of the most common areas of public policy where you'll hear liberals and secularists protest the interjection of religious values is in protecting life.

Whether it's protecting unborn human life, or the lives of those some consider "not worth living," citing a transcendent religious value as a reason not to end innocent human life is sure to get the Left frothing at the mouth.

In fact, respect for human life was a key reason behind the formation of a Leftwing secularist organization going under the deceptive title of "South Dakota Mainstream Coalition."

According to a report by David Kranz in the Argus Leader, executive director Senator Ed Olson of Mitchell said that the battle over the life and death of Terri Schiavo was the catalyst for the formation of the group. The same article also quoted Olson as saying, "Many of us don't like the idea of putting specific religious beliefs into state law."

"Specific religious beliefs" shouldn't be in the law? That's an interesting statement that, while you'd probably get quite a few people agreeing with it, I don't think many people have really thought through.

If a civilization comes to the point where it has no respect or regard for innocent human life, that is a civilization on the brink of chaos and collapse. And in a world as dangerous as ours--where many already have contempt for these values of life--I don't think we want American civilization to collapse and leave us defenseless before the bloodthirsty.

Well, the BATS are back at it again this Easter.

You might recall that last Easter, a group of secularist bloggers started a blogswarm to "Blog Against Theocracy." At first I assumed they would be blogging against the ancient nation of Israel, or perhaps some Muslim countries, but I quickly realized they were blogging against something that didn't exist in America and wasn't being worked for in America...yet they wanted people to believe it was.

I use the term BATS because the whole concept of "Blogging Against Theocracy" in a country where there has never been theocracy, is no theocracy, and is no move to institute theocracy is quite silly. Thus, BATS: Blogging Against Theocracy Silliness.

This group of misguided souls believes that any influence of religious faith in the public square constitutes "theocracy." They believe theocracy is manifested in things like teaching creationism, defending the human life of disabled people like Terri Schiavo, defending unborn children, maintaining the definition of marriage as between one man and one woman, and any expression of faith in the public square or acknowledgement of the Christian heritage of America.

And though the group claimed they have nothing against Christianity, they chose to have this "Blog Against Theocracy" on Easter, the most sacred holiday in Christianity....................

There is much talk today about the “culture of death” and certainly there are powerful forces emanating from competing worldviews that predictably foster such conditions. These worldviews have driven us as a culture to legitimize abortion, consider euthanasia, and proceed to cross a whole host of bio-ethical issues as technology advances. However, these worldviews, in which the value of life and human dignity are diminished, inevitably encounter a most formidable obstacle: natural revelation.

The doctrine of natural revelation was probably best articulated by the 13th century theologian and philosopher, Thomas Aquinas in his monumental work, Summa Theologica. Aquinas argued that truth is known through both reason (natural revelation) and faith (supernatural revelation). This followed the Augustinian concept of “I believe (i.e. have faith) in order to understand.” However, the 17th century Enlightenment project turned this on its head by now saying “I must understand in order to believe” and unfortunately that has been the dominant epistemology in the Western world ever since.................

As this season envelops the many of us in thoughts of faith, I ponder what Our Lord sometimes hands us. Sometimes we receive grievous afflictions, often cosmetic and horrible for all to see, often less visable. It is up to us how to handle this as a gift or a curse. Some hold the affliction as a cross to bear and continue bravely, knowing the rewards may be found beyond the boundary of life. Others show their sores in pity on the living hell they face here on earth irrespective of the one they may face for a whole long time.

Hence another ping to the thread and the solution found by the woman with the disfigured face in France. Perhaps we may reflect on those who bore their crosses here on earth and pray for those unable to grasp the simplicity of faith. May we pray for those of sparse faith that they gain more through their afflictions.

I would wish they could see the many with horrible burdens who showed up three years ago to stand for Terri. They did so not to call attention and pity to their own burdens, but to show the understanding through their gifts of why Terri's burden justified our battle.

As you are new around here, I will give you the benefit of the doubt.

This is a PROTECTED thread and we take the protection of innocent life VERY seriously around here. Not only are we not interested in debate on this thread, we won't tolerate it. Additionally, we hold dear the thirteen day period from March 18th through March 31st when Terri was being murdered. And we are also very aware of the "importance" that the culture of death places on these days.

If you want to ask questions, that is encouraged, that is one of the reasons we have this thread. However, asking personal questions is impolite and unnecessary. Please read all of the "Terri Dailies" threads, they are quite possibly the most comprehensive compilation of pro-life resources and articles available anywhere.
